I want an M1 Garand baddd.

In that case they could add the Galil, Tantal, etc. etc. I think the AK covers that category.

The only gun on that list that I´ve seen live was the FAL. The wounds were not a beautiful sight. I don´t see how can anyone survive a shot of that thing unless it hits the hand, and it will probably take the limb off. I´ve only heard gunshots of AK-47 and M16...

I'm afraid it's gonna be the P90. It's got a great backing (The FN USA Office is right here in VA) and a lot of political power to get it in place.

The aforementioned list is pretty reasonable using the method they used to choose how they went in order and which ones were even considered.

I'm actually gonna shooting next weekend with my cousins, our shot list so far is:

1. Mosin-Nagant
2. Carbine Mosin-Nagant
3. Remington 700 (with Leupold Scope)
4. Marlin Lever Action .22
5. M1 Garand

and a small assortment of shotguns for shooting skeet.

I don't know a lot about rifles but they seem to have examined the main attributes that would make one better than another (though the service history seems kind of superfluous to be judging a rifle on as some of them were phased out simply to make way for a newer design rather than any major shortcoming of the gun itself). Also the guys they interview seem to be pretty well informed, that really fat guy was even in the marines, so he's definitely spent some time around firearms.

Meh. I didn't watch the video, but I can just tell by looking at the list order it was more or less 'which is the most famous'.

If I could only pick one off of the list as the best, I would go with the M1. Accuracy of a bolt action with the privilege of semi automatic fire.

That sounds badass dude But you think the P90 is gonna be phased in as the next main assault rifle? (replacing the M4?) That surprises me, seeing as how it's really more of an SMG and was designed to provide the armor-piercing power of an assault rifle while still being lightweight and portable (but thus doesn't have much stopping power I'd imagine, the bullets are insanely tiny, they just travel a fuckload faster) And I'm surprised the G3 didn't make the list in question

Right now a lot of the military philosophy of combat weapons is to put more lead down range. The smaller the ammo, the more you can fit in a clip. Essentially it can work like covering fire that can last a long time, also with the capability to actually hit something.

In the right condition and setting, the P90 proves to be an excellent weapon. Personally though, I don't see it being used best as the standard issue long-arm. Like you said, the caliber is really small (less velocity on impact as well as accuracy) and you are forced to spend a lot of ammo to successfully drop a target.

I'm a huge proponent of the WWII US Squad based tactics. Officers carry the SMGs, NCOs carry the carbines, grunts and lesser NCOs carry rifles and squad guns (.50 machine guns). Even now with the first GI shotgun* in the works, options can be had for the grunts as to what secondary action they want on their piece.

I've got a pre-WWI Spandau Mauser that I would love to fire, but since it's the older model than the 98k it's tough to find the right ammo.

*I know there have been shotguns issued since Vietnam, but they have been for small number contracts and certainly not GI. The new one is the XM26, made by C-More Systems. I used to work for them.

Granted, it's hilariously fun to shoot that thing, stupid crazy rate of fire and very easy to control. Also, I'm not sure what branch of the military you're a member of (if at all), but they teach us controlled, well aimed fire, not spray-and-pray. I'd prefer to keep the M16 family of weapons with an upgraded recoil system (gas piston). The M16 familiy of weapons is very accurate, and contrary to popular opinion, kills people very well (trust me, I have first hand experience with this). However, if I had to pick something else I'd roll with the FN FAL. My father has one and it's a beast. Not trying to start a war by the way, just throwing out my opinion after almost ten years of being an Infantryman.

It sounds like you are describing the HK416 to me! Funny, but I saw a special last night on the M16, and they discussed the HK416 at the end. All hints pointed towards them using it as the next standard infantry weapon.

There's a video on youtube of a guy submerging an M16/M4 in water, then firing. It blew right up in his hands! The HK416 didn't miss a beat when tested! I have no doubt the M16/M4 is a great weapon though. I really want a Bushmaster or Colt when I have the dough.

Referring to your comment on the 5.56, I always find it hilarious when guys bag on the M16 saying: "Pussy ass round, no damage..." This usually comes from the guys who swear by their AKs and think everything else sucks lol. I guess velocity and the tumbling effect of the 5.56 doesn't enter into the equation for those jokers.
