Asia is not that hot IMO, as for Dario he has his ups

"Profondo Rosso"
"Suspiria"
"Tenebre"
"L' Uccello dalle piume di cristallo "

and downs:

"Opera"
"Trauma"
"Inferno"
"La Sindrome di Stendhal"
"Phenomena"

I think Dario's ups are:

- Profondo Rosso
- Tenebrae
- Suspiria
- The Bird With The Crystal Plumage
- Phenomena
- Opera
- Sleepless

Downs:

- Cat O Nine Tails
- Inferno
- The Card Player
- Phantom of the Opera (TERRIBLE, easily his worst film)

Can't even find Four Flies On Grey Velvet ANYWHERE... And haven't checked out Trauma & Stendhal Syndrome yet coz all I hear is that he was tryin to make US style thrillers with them so I'm far less interested, but do wanna check out Trauma soon.

With Fulci, I think The New York Ripper & Zombie are easily his 2 best. New York Ripper is a highly underrated giallo!!!! Great mystery, awesome seedy NY atmosphere, with nasty violence & tons of smut!! And Zombie, what a classic! *THE* Italian zombie film!!!!

City of the Living Dead, The Beyond & Don't Torture A Duckling are all good films but not as good... IMO outside of NY Ripper & Zombie, Fulci's films had great moments rather than being great films. Manhattan Baby just sucks...

Anyone into Umberto Lenzi, Ruggero Deodato, Andrea Bianchi and Aldo Lado stuff?! I love Italian horror!

I forgot "Il Gatto a nove code" when I wrote my post, I'm not familiar with "4 mosche di velluto grigio" and regarding "Sleepless" ("Non ho sonno") I didn't even know he made something after "Phantom Of The Opera", and that one is so awfully bad I didn't even recall it was his!

I'm less familiar with Fulci cinematrography except for "Zombie" ("Zombi 2"), "Seven Doors of Death" ("E tu vivrai nel terrore - L'aldilà"), "The Beyond" ("Zombi 3"), "House By The Cemetery" ("Quella villa accanto al cimitero") . Frankly very cheesy subpar movies but all entertaining nevertheless. I want to see " Don't Torture a Duckling" ("Non si sevizia un paperino") and "A Lizard in a Woman's Skin" ("Schizoid", "Una lucertola con la pelle di donna") which are supposedly better relative to his cinematography.

Cannibal holcaust is one of the most fucked up movies I have ever seen. I watched it and then watched the original texas chainsaw massacre and was bored shitless. Def. the italians were more fucked up. Romero is secretly god. Oh they are remaking the Hill Have EYes which Im really interested in seeing. They originally rated it NC 17 but for theater purposes changed some stuff, Ill have to check it out on DVD to get the unedited version.

Yeah i have not yet seen the new york ripper yet i have heard a lot of good
things about that movie. Fulci had a movie in the early 90's called Demonia
that id enjoyed quite a bit. And Land Of The Dead was super good for a
mainstream movie I was suprised at the amount of gore.

Agreed on Fulci films but cheesy but entertaining :) Don't Torture A Duckling is definitely a more serious work, and quite a creepy small-village giallo film. Nowhere near as entertaining though, or violent obviously, but a nice film. The New York Ripper is highly recommended!!!! Great giallo with a sleazy early 80s look and tons of smut & violence. Definitely on the sleazier & nastier side of the "giallo" genre along with films like Strip Nude For Your Killer.

Cannibal Holocaust is one of the best horror films ever made!!!

Oh yeah, Argento has made 2 films since the atrocious "Phantom of the Opera". Sleepless was made in 2001 and is an EXCELLENT return to the giallo style!! It's kinda like, Bird With The Crystal Plumage mixed with Deep Red, with a bit of Tenebrae! Looks very '70s and very classic Italian horror! EASILY his best film since the '80s I reckon, possibly the best since Tenebrae for some people but I love Phenomena & Opera too... He also made "The Card Player" in 2003 but avoid that, its a disaster zone! It's about a killer who plays internet poker with people and looks like its shot on DV instead of film too, not a good movie! Even the mystery is weak.

Another Ruggero Deodato film I like is "House on the Edge of the Park" made in 1980, it's basically one of the many Italian rip-offs of Last House on the Left. Not as good as Last House but still a good rape-revenge flick, and stars David Hess from Last House too! But compared to Cannibal Holocaust, well.. it really doesn't compare. Cannibal Holocaust is timeless and still fresh because of it's verite style as well.

I couldn't stand Land Of The Dead, hated the look & feel of the movie. Too hi-tech looking for me! As far as new horror flicks go, "The Devil's Rejects" and the low budget Aussie flick "Wolf Creek" both SLAUGHTERED Land of the Dead as far as 2005 horror releases went!! Both raw, 70s style horror.

I watched "Burial Ground" again last night haha, that's a fun little piece of cheesy Italian b-grade zombie trash! Enjoyable, especially the creepy incestuous kid and the unforgettable finale haha.

It's on my wish list :D along with "Bubba Ho-Tep" and "Shadow: Dead Riot" for horror. As for sleaze (my way of it): "99 Women", "Venus In Furs", "Thriller - A cruel picture" and "School of the Holy Beast".

Now I can recommend for horror and/or sleaze some gems I do own like:

"Images of a Convent"
"Alucarda"
"The Bloody Judge"
"Mark of the Devil"
"The Erotic Rites of Countess Dracula"
"The Halfway House" :worship:
"Vampyros Lesbos"

All this unrelated to the thread main idea but nevertheless funny.

Okay, okay I saw the list!!! Great choices there, I forgot about Waxworks, that was a great one...have to upgrade that to DVD, it's on a 2-on-1 with Waxwork 2. Lady in White scared the bejesus out of me when I first saw it, I was like 10 or something.

I got one of the numbered editions of Cannibal Holocaust, the packaging is amazing!! (Think the packaging is just as good on the Deluxe one available now too, and the same extras, tons of them!)

Don't expect much from 99 Women... It's ok as a WIP drama, as a sleaze film its super-tame. The French "X" Rated cut has inserted hardcore scenes which are apparently crap anyway and have nothing to do with the movie, and Franco's Unrated director's cut which is the preferred version (the one I have too) is very mild and not very interesting. His entry to the infamous "Ilsa" series, "The Wicked Warden" is a far better WIP style exploitation flick than 99 Women, but not as good as the original Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS! (Avoid the 2nd Ilsa - Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks, not very good!)

I hear GREAT things about Thriller: A Cruel Picture! A good friend has it, dyin' to watch it at his place!!

I think the smuttiest director of all time is Joe D'Amato haha. Terrible films but so smutty!! Porno Holocaust, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, the Emmanuelle films, Images In A Convent... He rules!!!

ha when i saw this thread title immediately i thought of "Kujo"(think thats how its spelled) that movie made me scared to pet dogs

If it came out in the 90's that movie was called Innocent Blood. I
liked that movie it had a mafia theme base to it. And how in the fuck
can I forget this movie it came out in the late 80's and it was like a vampire
modern day western called Near Dark very cool film indeed!

The Ilsa series are hard-to-get, not much into WIP anyway but I do like Franco films.

As for D'Amato is good if you look for crap (with style but crap anyway), "Emanuelle In America" and "Images in a Convent" are very interesting but I'm thinking seriously about "Porno Holocaust" it's suppoosed to be so bad that it's good! Another of his movies "Anthropophagus" has just been released by Shriek Show (Media Blasters) on DVD.

Yeah, Australia especially has different laws with ratings than the US - when something is unrated in the US it is still legal to buy & sell just more limited, but in Australia if something is unrated it is effectively banned because you can't buy, sell, hire, exhibit or import it. That said though, its much easier for something to pass for an R rating here than it is in the US. Doesn't stop me though, customs wouldn't ever have a clue what's banned and what's not... I imported the Ilsa boxset on DVD from DVDpacific.com (3 Ilsa movies in their original cases the single versions come in, just packaged together in another box, for about US$25, excellent online DVD store!) and they got through fine, despite "She Wolf" & "Wicked Warden" both being banned here.

Yeah I wanna see Anthropophagus too, I'm gonna order that! Porno Holocaust is alot harder to find though... My friend has a bootleg video of Anthropophagus. He ordered it from a store here in Melbourne called Polyester Books which bootlegs tons of exploitation films & video nasties and sells them really cheap, except they got raided a few months ago by the federal police and are in big trouble now. They actually got raided for selling X rated porn though, not for the banned films. (X rated porn isn't allowed to be sold over the counter in this state, only in ACT and Northern Territory, even though every block in the city has an adult book store that sells it)
