The Pale Haunt Departure, Not the Strong, With Rue and Fire, Autumn Reflection, Lost in a Day, Dark World Burden, In the Absence of Grace(short version). Same shit we always do.

Hehehe. Yeah, I guess you are right.
Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Have you guys ever considered doing something like.
"Let the fans vote the setlist"? I know it is cliched, since so many bands have done it, but could be interesting.

I know with all the line-up changes and no full time keyboardist, some songs might be not as feasible to pull of live.

We've asked in the past what people would like to see in a live ND setlist, and we always take it into consideration but at the end of the day, we have to play not only what we enjoy playing most, but also what we're capable of playing (like already said, songs that feature keyboards or female vocals or all acoustic guitars tend to be difficult to pull off live, especially at fests or shows where our stage time is limited to begin with). I really like the set we've been playing lately, I think it's a good balance of heavy/soft, fast/slow, etc. We just wish we had more opportunities to play longer sets so we could throw in a few other tunes as well. Line-up changes don't really make too much of a difference (other than the loss of a female vocalist) in terms of playing older material. Any old songs could easily be learned by the "new guys" if necessary.

After 5 albums, it just gets harder and harder to please everyone with 40 minute or less set times! If I had my way, I'd love to pull a Green Carnation and play the entire "Pale Haunt..." cd live! :)

I always liked our "updated" version of "Chorus of Jasmine" that we did back around '99, 2000....those early songs are just so damn long and slow! If and when we do the live concert dvd, we'll have to do at least one of them though, I think.

Yes, i'd love some songs off Amid, and more off Sculpured (my favorite)... but I completely understand you ommiting those becaue you guys always get such a short set unfortunately...

Bring on the DVD!

I think doing a set of nothing but PHD straight through would be great.
Lots of concert goers hate when bands play new songs live.
This has been a complaint that people make about Maiden.
I completely understand that a band is excited when a new release comes out and would rather play the new one straight through than play older material that has been overkilled live.

I often become agitated when a band (like Maiden) plays too much newer stuff and not enough classics. In our case, I feel that the material from TPHD is just so much stronger live and more fun to play, and a bit more lively than alot of our past material. Like I've said before, certain ND songs might be really cool to listen to and enjoy on cd but having them keep an audience rapt in the live setting is a whole 'nother matter completely.

Back when I first joined ND, we used to play almost the entire "Of Sculptured Ivy..." cd live, actually. Became harder to do when CJ left, of course. I think we have some home video footage of those shows though, so chances are part of them will wind up on the dvd whenever it comes out.

People tend to forget the point of a tour. You're going out to promote your newest CD, and to get people interested in it, to buy it if they have not already. Any older song and classics a band plays are a treat for the fans. It's like Metallica going out and only playing Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning songs. I would LOVE that, but I can see why they and the record label might be against the idea.

On the other hand, comparing a band like Maiden to us is just silly any way you slice it. Look at Paradise Lost for example. The first time they came here to play, the played NOTHING from Lost Paradise, and only one song from Gothic, and I was PISSED. I think when a band makes a first appearance, there's a bit of an obligation to play old material too, but for us, who play mostly festival shows, time iss limited, and we choose to promote the newest CD more then the old stuff. Someday when we film for the DVD, we'll play an hour or an hour and 30 minutes, and add in lots from our catalog.

I didn't mean to directly compare you to Maiden.
Just meant that they are a band who always plays the majority of their new album when they tour for a new album.
Personally, I have no issues with this, especially if it is a band I am a true fan of where I would know every song from the album anyhow.

Paul, you are completely correct. Paradise Lost want to forget their past it seems, the oldest they played was Icon stuff, which is a bunch of shit. At least the Gathering, which are completely differnet style now, but even BETTER imo, have managed to update their old songs and incorporate them into their live set, which I think is great.

I love it when bands put on really strong albums and play them all the way through.. (like old prog bands like Camel, Pink Floyd, etc) and even bands like Enslaved doing ISA, or whatnot.

I think a set doing PHD from start to finish would be fantastic, because the songs as you said fit better in a live setting and the songwriting is fantastic. It would be classic.

It was great seeing Green Carnation doing LODDOD from start to finish, and i'm sure that will probably never happen again, or is very rare. They pulled it off flawlessly too.. even without the female vocals in the middle.. the

well, they didnt do it FLAWLESSLY. Kenneth screwed up the timing for one of the keyboard parts and through off the whole band (mainly Kjetil, I think. he started the vocals real early on one of the parts), but they pulled it together!

I'd totaly travel to wherever to see ND play an entire album!

Enslaved performed ISA straight through? When was this?
That would be cool.

I guess it all depends if you have a killer album.

No smoking pole here, but PHD is a truly amazing album which I think would come off great live. Great mix of heavy and meloncholy.

I think some bands could not pull this off, esp if they have too much filler in their albums (IE - Metallica, Priest, etc)

Oh yeah Dio has been doing Holy Diver lately too... that's pretty cool :)
