TOUGHEST QUESTION EVER ON THIS FORUM

Sabbath all the way. Songs like War Pigs, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Paranoid set the standard that metal bands are still trying to live up to.

Honourable mentions go to Judas Priest, Metallica (their new stuff leaves a lot to be desired, but their albums from the 1980s are fantastic), and Iron Maiden.

If your talking greatest has to be Maiden or priest... or sabbath

But my fav would be Dream Theater atm

I agree, Priest, Maiden and Sabbath...early Priest stuff is brilliant and Sabbath really started it all and Maiden added the musicianship.

actually i am all the way sabbath on this 1

Agreed. We probably would not be discussing metal if they had not come around. Either that, or it would all be 15 years later and we would all be discussing who had the highest hair....

Yes...and no. My only hesitation would be drawing the line between hard rock and heavy metal. If we can agree that AC/DC is heavy metal, then my vote goes to them.
Yeah its a difficult one these days with so many catagories. I say if Sabbath is metal so is ACDC. I think this question has to be broken down in dacades. They and others definately inspired 80s thrash as Anthrax has inspired some of this newer shit. Its like rumours on a production line, by the end its a whole different story. Just to quote Ozzy "theres so many metals today. Heavy metal, thrash metal..........aluminium metal" and that was in the early nineties.
