Track level question!

Hey guys, While I'm not after getting the loudest recording, I feel like my mixes are quieter and weaker than most even with a limiter on the master.
Do your individual tracks in your sessions clip, but not the master, or do you have everything pulled down so there is no clipping with nothing on the master?

The album I'm currently mixing was recorded with peaks hitting -12 dB in Cubase. But the most important factor for getting volume is actually to filter out frequencies you don't need - especially the low frequencies, which choke master limiters much harder than high frequencies.

I only just recently learned about rms, and working on controlling the low end. Hopefully applying this stuff will yield better results. Thanks alot guys!
