I have recently begun trying out a PR40 for tracking heavy guitars. The results have definitely been hit and miss. Using a Marshall JVM410H and a JCM900. Guitars are PRS's, SG's and Fenders.

First of all the palm mute and lead tones are great, almost no EQ needed.

The problem I'm running into is chord driven stuff, think Thrice choruses. Very thin sounding and overly bright.

Any suggestion to try to get this sound in order?

I'd post samples but I'm at work.

Sounds like a mic placement issue. I'm using the PR40 on guitars as we speak, and find it really close to how it sounds in the room. Because of how big the mic is, the placement is going to a little different to a 57. I'm kind of pointed at the left edge of the dust cap, and then angled outward a bit for a little less fizz. Also, I'm about 1.5" away from the grill.

I'm at about an inch from where the grill would be (removed for recording), straddling the right edge of the dustcap/cone.

By angled out, what do you mean? Parallel with the angle of the cone?

Marshall JCM900's aren't the thickest of amps - I find them to be really thin and brittle sounding. That said if you are getting a usable sound from it, playing with the placement might be able to help a bit.

If you can get hold of another amp (even to blend with) if might help a bit.
