Tracking Vocal Harmonies

When tracking vocal harmonies, do you guys track the lead and then let the singer monitor that lead in their HF mix as they track the harmony?

Do you let them monitor ONLY what their singing?

Sometimes it seems like singers have a hard time understanding how I'd like the harmony sung, and im not sure which way is the most conducive way for that.

for tightness it works best to have them sing to the original melody but you need to find what works best for the singer. Sometimes its best to just let them roll through on the harmony part itself and hope their timing is good. I've had instances where I had to mute all the music and just have the singer do the part 3 or 4 times in a row a capella ... then just slip it in place manually later on
