I'm trying to get a handle on tremolo picking... if someone could post a few pics or even a short video clip showing technique that'd be great!

hmmm, pics...... not really....
only thing I can say: I feel more comfortable when trem-picking pretty close to the trem (is it called "trem-picking" because of this???). normally, my pick is somewhere above the bridge-PU when trem-picking, with my hand somewhere over the bridge. I also hold the pick at an angle.
maybe you can find some good picks or even videos by looking around the hps of some blackmetal bands (or other bands that you know use trem-picking a lot)

Get something like (book) 'Speed mechanics for lead guitar' by Troy Stetina - it's got loads of pics and advice an all these sort of techniques. It's called trem-picked because of the fast 'tremelo' (varying in volume) type sound.
Just keep practicing and relax your picking hand.
