I think katatonia is playing great music, who gives a rats arse whether it's considered metal or rock or metalrock or popmetal or whatever. I know they don't...

its called metal, so it is metal. i dont consider slipknot/linkin park etc metal but they are. anyway ive always seen them more as a rock band, anyway i dont lose any sleep over it.

I listen to mellow stuff as well as to music that's generally considered extreme by non-metal 'freaks'. So I'm something like a half breed metalhead? Oh well, who cares...?
To answer your initial question: Katatonia is somewhere in between, and I really don't know where they are musically, all I know is that they've found a nice niche
