tsunami aid contributions?

honestly i'd probably only give $$ to dr. without borders... in my experience they really do what avi said. use most of the $$ for direct assistance and not administrative stuff.

greg, probably not (since shipping it there would cost more than buying it nearby the area) but i guess you could ask the red cross.

Doctors Without Borders is great because the money is only used to get doctors and their equipment there. I would not give to any of the big orgs like Red Cross and Unicef because most of the money is spent in making those huge orgs run. And I don't like the principle of feeding people in the long run; heal them, feed them, get them back on their feet, give them ways to feed themselves and go.

ok so nix email me/txt or something

i already gave $75 to DW/O borders and i am going to send them another $100 after i get paid tonight. i figure if i skip a haircut and stuff it'll break even.

Oh sure, I run across this thread 15 minutes after donating to Unicef. Life is pretty difficult sometimes!

oh also this is touching:

one of the guys I was working with in NYC (see new year's thread) is this HIV+ homeless kid I'll call C. he was so worked up about the tsunami he was trying to arrange to go to Indonesia (which I think he thought was the same as India) to volunteer! and the social worker was like "C., you know how much disease is going on with the corpses and drinking water and everything over there? you need to not be there. especially not before you've gotten off your ass and gotten your medicaid straightened out"

and C. was crushed he couldn't do something to help, and wanted to donate his paycheck somewhere (he works four hours a week and that's his only source of income).
