What's your opinion on using tube preamps for drums? I prefer Neve/Api/other console pres over them but I don't have that much experience. I haven't recorded in a studio with 8+ REAL tube preamps.
Bizzarre as it may seem; I've yet to use a tube Pre that REALLY does anything for me.
The Ua 2610 is nice on overheads, but doesn't knock my socks off. The chandler TG2 sounds more Tubey than a lot of tube pre's (slow slew rate; dark etc)
HUGE fan of Neve style Pres; Great river especially. Love API on toms
When you are using them for overheads, don't you feel that the snare and room ambience is a pushing a bit too much? I've been using transparent pres for overheads due to that reason. I think even Api has too much saturation. And yes, I am talking about modern metal not rock where you build everyhing around overheads.
