I've been switching from Metallica to In Flames alot. The problem with playing In Flames is that it takes forever to drop it down 2 steps. I'm really just starting guitar so I'm trying to play different stuff. Anyways, besides just tuning what else do I need to do to my guitar, i.e. my thrustrod? Also, if anyone has any suggestions on what to play to help me get up to par faster that would be much appreciated.

Up to par? That's stuff is rather on the easy end of metal. However what do you mean, if you're just tuning down to C why would you need to mess with anything else? Unless you've a tremlo and you've loosen it so the tension doesn't mess your tuning up.

fastest way to tune down like that is get a chromatic tuner, thicker strings (10 guage at least... better yet 11 or 13) If you find yourself in C standard often, get it set up professionally for that tuning.

I've been playing all the harder(to me) lead parts and a few of the solos from Metallica. Also playing a little Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, and Trivium. What bands would be the next closest step?

I skipped a good deal of steps to be honest with you and started with Judas Priest's Painkiller. lol Maybe Kreator after Arch Enemy. I know Immortal was very good for learning to sustain speed. Some Hammerfall and Exodus aren't too terribly difficult. Maybe if you can tell me which songs you can play by the bands you mentioned I could help more, this is how I learned as well.

Metallica's Master of Puppets album(I'm not good with fast rhythms yet so I can't do some of the songs), In Flames - all of Biosphere, most of Behind Space, some of Scorn, Swim, Trigger, In Flames, Arch Enemy's We Will Rise, At The Gates' Slaughter Your Soul, Trivium's Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Matyr, and a few fun riffs from Children of Bodom and Slayer. I really want to play something I know because I know the rhythmic patterns by heart, but whatever it takes to raise the bar I am down for.

Hey I didn't notice you were from Ohio. lol

Okay yea, before you even attempt shredding some fast solos, get those rythems down tight. Work on the Kreator, once you get that Immortal is even faster and he sustains the speed, so that'll help you with double picking.
