I really love this technique for pre-production stuff. It suprises me every time how good the attack is on snare and toms. Sure, that mono overhead is a bit annoying but I think it could be improved using some stereo widening tricks.

What do you think?

That's fucking insane! No processing?

I hear an healthy amount of compression and I'm fairly sure you need to boost the low mid quite a bit to get the body from the snare from a distance...

It sounds cool. I used to do that on my cassette portastudio when I started recording. Needless to say it didn't sound nearly as good as this. Funny stuff, my OH mic was one of those video shotgun mic.

Very nice Daunt!
I also experimented with this a few years ago.. and got pretty good results.. 1 sm57 as overhead and D112 on the kick. Obviously helps a lot if its a great sounding drum.
At the time I experimented with my Yamaha Oak Custom kit and sounded great.

cheers

wow that sounds surprisingly decent for just two mics. really pretty damn cool. Im gonna do this next time i need to track my drummer quick and dirty for a rehearsal recording. thanks
