So, who's loving the production on this one?

Just picked it up and absolutely love the mix vibe. Everything is so rounded off, gentle and analogue. It's right on the border of 'too muddy' but not quite.

It's great that certain plug-ins let us get this sort of aesthetic in the box these days... we can finally move past that boring clean thing and get mixes more like this.

Not really intending to talk about the music on this one tho. If it goes there I'll probably end up trolling my own thread....

I think i'll purchase this, never really listened to underoath before though, Heard it roughly on myspace. Sounds like a really warm mix and i don't mind the songs either!

Wont be expecting it to be as good musically as their real early stuff though.
In fact probably wont be all that good musically at all.
They had something a bit innovative and different happening in their early days, but the sound has shifted a lot, no doubt due to the fact there are no original members left.
Listened to both the previous two albums, maybe 4 times each before I just thought "meh" about the music.
The production on this latest should make it one of those albums I'll listen to regularly just for the production, even if I don't dig the music.
So I suppose, the worse their music gets over time, the better the production gets over time haha.
Really love that rounded off sound, so much better than listening to that harsh, grating shit that sounds like it was produced for people over the age of 70 who can barely hear 7Khz.

thanks goodness.
people tend to give me crap on here when I post mixes that aren't crystal clear. it's good that someone appreciates having a mix that's a little muddy.

I'm loving the production of it.
it's very compelling.

I am, however sad that like their last release it's barely remember-able.
I couldn't recall a single vocal part or progression if you paid me.
I could listen through the whole record again and still not know what to expect.
it has that weird dragging feeling about it. even when it's driving forward.
still, better than the last record though.

Yeah, I get exactly what you mean.
The band used to sound so unique in their early days. Pretty much after Dallas left, it started to go really down hill IMHO.
There was one or two good, standout songs on the last two albums generally, but the rest is just really meh.
This thread inspired me to put on those last two albums again (both of which have pretty decent mixes), and I was just struck by how much the band really has just started to sound like pretty much every other fucking band in that scene, which is a huge shame, because they showed great potential in their earlier years. But I suppose that's what shifts records and helps them to get the gigs with the top level producers, engineers and mixers.
I wont be surprised upon hearing the entirety of the new album (which will be soon enough), that the band has gone further in that direction of that homogenized, bland and boring sound.

i have all stems if anyones interested. its really nice to hear how everything gets together.
musically im not that much of a fan, but i dig how they have this natural thing to their music, where everything progresses
in a natural way, not like most bands putting riff after riff to sound cool. its very mature (to my ears).
but again, im not really saying this is great music (for me).

but yeah : +1 to the production, absolutely love it!

YES YES on the stems. I know there were "Illuminator" stems for that competition, but do you mean you have more than that?

haha, sorry man, yeah just for that one song :)
so do you want those? or do you already have them?

btw. i modelled the drumssound with kontakt and superior and got pretty close.
(of course you can never have the exact same sound, but i loved how the
whole kit sounds like one piece!)

amazing album. (production and songwriting). i really love the new underoath direction with aaron out. more ambiental music. i love the ambiental songs in their two past albums (specially define the great line) and i´m surprised with this new album. awesome.

The mix is awesome. Only heard of Ben Grosse a few months ago when I heard his mix on the newest Cartel album. So good. I think he's my new favourite.

Absolutely love the production. Album starts really strong, then just fizzles after track 4 or 5, IMO. Anyone know any info on the guitar and bass tracking?

Production is awesome, I like how it has that sort of dirty feel to it. can't wait to get a hold on the deluxe edition with the "behind the scenes dvd"
Should be plenty of good recording footage in goldman's badass studio, my band recorded drums there once and I still can't get over how awesome that place is.

Love how the vocals are just buried between the guitars. It gives the record the illusion of huge loudness, even though it's mastered very quiet. Great stylistic choice there.

Love the end of 'Illuminator' too. It's like a super heavy version of Stabbing Westward. If someone wrote a whole album based on that part, I'd buy it... and listen a lot.

I'm not digging the production nearly as much as the last album.

The cymbals have no presence, which really detracts from the drum sound to me. If they were a bit louder, it may be a different story, but I'm not getting that either.

The kit doesn't really sound like a kit at all, and the plasticy attack on the toms and kick drum is killing me. There could have been a much better way to get presence on those drums without adding that unnatural edge to them IMO.

The bass and guitars and vocals sound great, and the low end of the mix is great, but the drums are still keeping me from loving it.
