Upon Reflection

Uaral's album hit me like a ton of bricks when I first heard it but there are a couple parts that really fuck up the entire album for me.

Neurosis' album was meh, then great, then terrific, now back to pretty good all over again.

The Leviathan and Xasthur releases were great at first as well but are kind of lackluster now, especially the Xasthur release.

The Morgion release has grown on me MUCH more in the past couple months.

I still don't have the patience for Void of Silence - Human Antithesis for some fucking reason.

Uhh.. I loved the Woods of Ypres album when I first heard it..
can't even sit through it now.

Necrophagist! First I hated it, then I... oh wait...

Fate of Norns got a bit better.

Dunno what else

My opinion on most albums this year hasn't changed much. If I loved/hated it at first (within several listens), I still do.

Yes, I agree with this. I may not like something *quite* as much as when I first heard it (perhaps from the excitement wearing off), but nothing has ever gone from GOOD -> BAD or vice versa. (Woods of Ypres and new Enslaved have both been tarnished by general disinterest in prog-black metal, which started at Borknagar, but I still recognize their quality if that makes sense).

Anyway, it would be weird if it did happen, quite honestly. I'm not sure how that's even possible to go from liking something to hating something....especially within a 12 month timeframe!! What are we dealing with here, 'evolving tastes' or 'Attention Deficit Disorder'? :tickled:

EDIT: Although I do realize it can work the other way round, where it takes time to appreciate something, but I'm not sure if that qualifies as 'disliking it'....

The only album that I could reference for this thread is ARSis. Fucks sake, what a load of old sweaty bollocks. I admit, I got suckered into the hype. At first it was derivative melo-death.....then everybody was saying it was brilliant....so I *tried* to like it and probably forced myself to be very forgiving....and then I just gave up and realized it was really nothing much more than Slaughter of the Soul part 2, with a few more frills. *yawns*

Well that settles it.

Yeah, I am somewhat disappointed with it as well, but I haven't given it all that many listens. Maybe it will grow on me, but my initial thought was "teh rush job!" Hopefully it will be enough to get David signed on a decent label (are record labels this fuckin' stupid? seriously, if fuckin' Wind of Ancient Forests Most Black and GaKAITHROUGH can get signed, surely an underground "hit" like WoY can, goddammit!) and release the album he's definitely capable of.

On Pursuit of the Sun : I used to hold it pretty highly, but as is the style of this thread, I have begun to like it a lot less... its just not worth it.

New WoY was ok on first listen, but it sort of wore off fast. Sort of like a melodeath album. Altogether that album will probably be my "dissapointment" of 2004. It really sucks when your most anticipated album for the year turns out to be a dud.

Haven't been able to make it through even one song of the new Woods of Ypres after reviewing it.

On my last listen, I made it all the way to halfway through the song and started skipping. Skipped a few after a minute or two, then just gave up and threw on Goat Horn - Storming the Gates instead. There's a fucking album that I can listen to all the way through and honestly love it all just about equally.

BOO to WoY being such a downer for all of us. I loved it so much the first time I heard it (at the release party) but I was drunk, so maybe that was it.

I gotta say, WoY slipped for me too (but I still like it, just not quite as much). But, I'm experiencing lots of indifference towards the latest Enslaved too. I don't like the new Borknagar. I tried listening to that Age of Silence, and I couldn't even make it past track #2. The same thing happened with the last Solefald album. And I can't even remember the last time I reached out for "The Sham Mirrors".....

So it's [nearly] official: Prog-Avante Garde Black Metal is the new melo-death. The antedote to these woes this evening? SARDONIC FUCKIN' WRATH. :kickass:

I still listen to that Solefald and Arcturus, both are some pretty tasty shit. If the new Woods of Ypres is on the same level as those two, I need to get it.
