What's the best way to place a MD421-II on a V30 speaker? I know, its a noob question but I've never done it before.

The best way is always to use your ears ... there are just too many factors involved for one single "best way" ... :)

I'm sure you're correct, but I would still like a good starting point.

I guess I need to put more faith in my ears. I think sometimes I get too caught up in the visual side of things.

Music is not a visual art form though ... get the book "Mixing With Your Mind" by Mike Stavrou. It's great and worth every penny. It will open up many doors in your head by showing you that things sometimes work the exact opposite way as you'd think.

I would suggest placing it about an inch or two in front of the center of the speaker for a starting point and than moving it a bit to the sides if there're too much highs. Then you can try it an inch to the left and pointing towards the center of the speaker (about 45 degrees angle) or from the center position pointing towards the ground again @ 45 degrees. No guarantees tough as I've never had a cabinet ;)

I like to pair mine with a 57 about an inch away from the grill, pointing straight to the edge of the dust cap. Then put the 421 straight in front of the cap in an 45 degree angle.

Works fine for me.

The 421 has a slightly more forgiving top end as opposed to a 57. I like mine generally on-axis between the dustcap's edge and the outer ridge.

What I like to do is put the signal in my headphone and play the guitar while an assistant / friend/girlfriend/drummer whatever victim you can enlist, sweeps the mic until I find a sweet spot. I will just *chug* on some power chords, I tell them "when I stop playing to stop moving the mic and lock it down."

It's fun because you get to blow your friends face off while he's down there moving the mic around

Yeah, 421 + 57 sounds like a great and often used combination
But surely great results cab be achieved with either mic on its own as well.

I am waiting for a Md421u5 to arrive which I got of ebay.
I was wondering do you use this like pointing direct at the speaker ala sm57 or do you have it vertical with one half pointing at the speaker kinda like a condenser??
