Very interesting Plugin Comparison

http://www.youtube.com/user/SSL9000Down#g/u

there's a bunch of comparison videos in there comparing various compressor plugins against each other.

its truely remarkable that there is so little difference between many of them, in most cases they are indistinguishable in this straight A/B test.

I found this one in particular to be very interesting, UAD LA-2A vs IK T-Racks Opto Comp:

looks like the UAD stuff isn't so special after all

to be fair, some of the UAD stuff is now a little outdated. The 1176, LA2A, pultec and Cambridge were coded around ten years ago; so its not surprising someone else has done a good version of an opto tube comp.
Im getting the Cla bundle next.
BIG time.
still love the Uad 1073. Kicks bottom.

ah, i didn't know that :)

still, i think the point of this is to show that these plugins from different manufacturers sound identical in an A/B test, so i don't think "better" is really a factor.

EDIT: what i mean to say is that it seems that its not a case of "X sounds better than Y", but rather "X and Y are identical".

My favourite compressor for drums is the URS 1980 classic compressor. I don't think it sounds better than any other compressor but it gets me the sound I'm after with the touch of a few buttons/knobs. There is no good or bad compressors, they just sound different. It depends on if you like it or not, someone else might not like what you like.

On the other hand since these classic compressors have been used on many many albums you have been listening to since you were born, a certain sound is imprinted in your brain and the best simulation of these sounds might be preferable.
