Hey everyone,

finally I got myself to sit down and record a cover of Nirvana 2002's Mourning. This is a short clip:

I tried to get it sound as closely as possible like the stuff from the early 90's, so I used some tape-emu stuff etc. and of course my beloved HM-2.
I warn you again: This is meant to sound raw as fuck, but maybe some old school fans here got some tips

Guitars are

MH-1000 -> HM-2 (9v) -> instr. in -> Amplitube 3 Marshall (JCM 800?) sim with cab bypassed -> Catharsis1 impulse -> Curve EQ

They are bassy but it does the trick.

Guitar tone is fucking weird, but yeah I guess that's the point. Drums sound a bit thin (cymbals), turn up the snare and kick a bit?

Drums are S2.0 with lots of post production, still working on them.

It's hard to get a thing sounding good without over-doing it, to maintain the whole old school sound. Creating a "lo-fi" sound is more of a challenge than I thought.

Guitars are a bit too bassy I think. They seem almost synth like to me, or like a bass with a lot of distortion.

Too bright compared to original track. 1990 productions are dark as hell. You should use LP filters in an extreme way to get that sound.
Also, try to record the final mix into a hifi cassette, and then return the cassette audio to the DAW. It's not real tape, but i's better than a plugin.
