I know a few of you around here are into videogames (so am I, but I actually do have a life). Most people by now probably knows that the more complex games actually have amazing scores. My background music in the office today was some of these. I was curious what some of your favorites are...

Personally, the last few Final Fantasy games had some of the best music in gaming. I mean, check out this orchestrated version of the song At Zanarkand from FFX. Beautiful.

A few others that come to mind are Xenogears, Chrono Trigger... Anybody else think of a good score on a game?

Zelda, of course!

Thirty years from now, I'll still be able to whistle "Hyrule Field" from memory.

The song you posted reminds me a bit of the soundtrack to The Dark Crystal, BTW. Very nice.

I generally don't listen to movie/tv/game soundtracks but I had the Katamari Damacy soundtrack. It was full of fun, quirky music.

Brian is really big into Final Fantasy music though. And if you didn't know about them, check out The Black Mages

The band is made up of some composers from Square Enix.

That was painful.

Quite some amazing composers there!

This is another favorite of mine... from Silent Hill 2:

I love LOTS of Video Game soundtracks!!! Final Fantasy 6 (or 3 on the SNES), Chrono Trigger was excellent! Castlevania:Symphony Of The Night was great too, killer guitar oriented music! Guilty Gear, were all Metal & Power Metal influenced characters!!! :headbang:

Keep a look out for Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy on tour. They've been doing full world tours and it is incredible. And the concert video and sound production is the world's best! (I know the guy in charge of all concert production, so I'm a bit biased). And I concur on The Black Mages as I've been setup with some of their stuff.

People who would have been movie composers are now doing video game composition. You can take entire courseloads focusing on it (I think there are even degrees on it now). The God of War stuff is good.

i agree, FF music is awesome

this one's from Dark Alliance: Baldur's Gate

Emperor: Battle For Dune. this is by david arkenstone...probably my favorite composer.

intro to Rome Total War

and my own pick from FFX.

I'm going to try to avoid the obvious choices; everyone and his mom knows final fantasy.

I'm surprised that Guilty Gear only has one mention.

Now going back to the 16 bit days, Light crusader had some amazing compositions, and made pretty good use of that little chip. It's pretty much straight up prog.

More genesis; biohazard battle. This still gets me pumped.

MORE GENESIS OH MY GHAD.

One of the best boss themes ever. Fantastic game, too.

Sleeper hit. I love this game. one of the few good multiplayer strategy games in the 16-bit era.. All of the music in the game is at least as good as this one, but this is the one I always picked when It was my turn.
Slow, brooding atmospheric stuff.

OH GOD. OH GOD. I DID NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED FUCK YES. I know I can't be the only person here who wanted to hear this....

I once knew of a CD, an import that was metal versions of FF music, I think it was called "Black Lotus"

Any body got a clue of what I am talking about

I know its out there

The Black Mages?

Check this out! Playing Sephiroth's theme with an orchestra. Note that Nobuo Uematsu himself is there too.

I have to say I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, I love the games and the movie. This is one of my personal favorite songs from the Silent Hill series;

Great stuff. Anyone know the name of the epic goth metal intro for Call of Duty World at War, the intro that plays when you leave the game alone? I can't seem to find it anywhere. That song so rocks! EDIT: Lol guess not..

OMFG! You've gotta be kidding right bro?!
Dude, I've been playing & LOVING ALL the Guilty Gear games since the first
one came out on the PSone!!:kickass: W/ the obvious exclusion of GG Isuka & that new
strategy one, that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do w/ the Guilty Gear
franchise whatsoever!!!:puke:
GUILTY GEAR RULES!!!:headbang:

We've uploaded two songs from the "GAME ON" album at this link:
http://www.officialvangough.com/

The song "Simon's Revenge" is a tribute to the game "Super Castlevania IV" from the Nintendo Entertainment System (the game was originally released in 1991). The song ambitiously combines five different songs from the game into one.

The song "Corneria" comes from the "Star Fox" game - also a Nintendo game, dating back to 1993. This song is quite the action-packed game-soundtrack that should appeal to all game-freaks out there.

Right now you can pre-order the "Game On" album at [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Game-Vangough/dp/B003BWN52E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1270813621&sr=8-3"]Amazon.com[/ame] - in a couple of days the album should also be available through other sources, such as CDBaby, The Laser's Edge and more.
