there are plenty of tips for guitarrecording on this forum.
mixing: take well recorded guitartracks and make them as loud as you want them in the mix.
I hardly use any EQ on guitars (cept HP and LP)

Hey there!

I'm also very new to this forum and I love it! :kickass:

There's one video that's quite interesting, but the guy is only talking about micing an amp an so on...

With Amp-modeling software you should probably try out some user-created presets and take a closer look at the settings.

Learning by doing!

I usually route all guitars to 1 bus with slight compression and as little EQ as possible

i used to use no more than 4 bands of eq (1 highpass, 1 lowpass) usually 1 pretty wide dip around 600 Hz and 2 narrow cut around 3 kHz. recently I've "discovered" Vintage warmer on the guitarbuss and usually need no EQ at all anymore :)

As Lasse said, I use hardly eq too much myself, because it's better to record a great guitar tone from scratch instead of eq-ing to death a shitty guitar tone.
If it sounds like shit it will sound like shit for ever.
Try and try and try and try till you get something that is good.

guitars are all about the source. Some of the best guitars I've heard were done with a simple SM57 and a tiny bit of mix eq.

Get the amp/guitar combo slamming and then put a 57 on the cone and double track it. If you pan this wide and it doesn't sound good JUST LIKE THAT... start again.

For mixing I'll sometimes low shelf the low end down to let the bass take care of the sub lows. I'll also poke out the upper mids around 2-3k, and sometimes add a high shelf at like 10k for a bit more sizzle. I like URS S series btw if you are using plugins. It works well with guitar sounds.

I always record my guitars straight into my AD converter because my room sounds terrible and my amp even worse. I still haven't found any decent program that would make the guitars sound thick and punchy. I usually just use the Guitar Amp pro in Logic, followed by an EQ, C4, L1 and then S1 imager to keep the guitar out of the middle where the bass, vox and drums need to cut thru. I have 2 guitar tracks on each side, so 4 all together. I eq the ones in the middle with a bit more mids and let these pan all the way across. It's still not how I want it to be, but sounds pretty thick. I've heard good things about the Waves GTR3. Has anyone tried it yet?

I think for hi-gain guitars, you're pretty much guaranteed to have the best luck with Revalver MkIII (if Peavey would ever release the motherfucker already, though you can download the demo). And stereo image enhancers always make me wary; I hate psychoacoustic phasey stuff, it usually just gives me a headache (though I'd imagine it could be decent in moderation, but shouldn't really be necessary to get a good tone).

Revalver MkIII is out. Go to there site.

I'm just waiting for a fix on a bug in Logic. :erk:

Yeah... no RTAS. Looks like I'm getting Digi Eleven.

Eek, not too sure about Eleven, from when I played it NAMM - harsh and brittle were my impressions, though I admit I didn't have much of a chance to really tweak. I'm pretty sure Alien Connections is working on an RTAS of Revalver, or you could get the FXPansion VST-RTAS wrapper (which seems like it'd be a really good investment in general for PT users)

Yeah, I need to get that fucking Wrapper anyway. We have it for both studios, but I gotta get it for here at home. I've got the Revalver MKIII demo at home. I use it as a stand alone to practice all day, while I'm working. I love it too. Haven't tried Eleven, but I know I'd RATHER have Revalver. I just need to get the Wrapper.

wow dude, no offence, but guitar amp pro really sounds like ass! not bad for tracking di tracks, but can`t get anything close to useable. sounds worse than the old zoom multi effects pedals lol. i tried using the overdrive plug before g.a.p and i got decent results, but everything sounds bluesy (for lack of a better descriptive word)

if you have gotten good results, i would love to hear a clip and have you share settings
