Vinyl or CD? which do you prefer collecting?

Well for the artwork alone Vinyl destroys CD packaging. However quality wise CD Destroys Vinyl every single time.

Actually, the sonic performance of vinyl is actually far superior to CD aslong as you don't scratch it. This is because vinyls can produce a larger range of frequencies as CDs are 'compressed' which removes the highest and lowest frequencies from the sound spectrum. The advantage of this for CDs is that it can get WAY more onto one but, for metal, albums that are longer than 40 minutes tend to have songs that could easily be removed.

I remember last summer I went across and stayed at a mates and I brought all my vinyls and a shit load of Jack Daniel's and we got pissed to like Peace Sells, Among the Living, Reign in Blood, Bonded by Blood and other vinyls that I've been able to find. In general, these vinyls sound a lot better.

Weird thing actually: in Fade to Black by Metallica you hear James say the second 'Good Byeeeeeeeee!' before the solo WAY clearer than on the CD version. I never realised it was even there until I listened to the vinyl!

Yeah, a lot of metal bands still prefer AAD or ADD i.e. recording an album with analogue equipment then digitally mastering it.

Then you get the Andy Sneap sound which is fully digital using Pro-tools: much cheaper and easier to use I guess. Tempo of the Damned by Exodus was done with Pro-tools as was The Gathering by Testament. Pro-tools has got a really bad rap for St. Anger though despite the fact that very few bands abuse it that way.

That's not fair. If we're talking about records made before 1990 or so, when records were made specifically with vinyl, not CD, in mind, I think the original vinyl sounds way better. The bands we love--Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Maiden, for me 80s punk rock, Van Halen, etc, I have the CDs out of necessity and the vinyl because it fucking sounds WAAAY better! Even if it's remastered on CD, I think the vinyl is better. The old analog recordings are just not meant for digital, in the end. (Although the remastered Van Halen Roth albums and Led Zep sound fabulous) Plus, those Maiden covers...

The Maiden remasters are horribly compressed, and I have the original CDs, which are much better, but the original vinyls are the much preferred format. The compressed remastered Live after Death vs the original vinyl? No fucking contest. I think it shouldn't be a surprise that Metallica haven't remastered their catalog, with what is being done with current remasters.

Disciple: regardless of what you may think of White Stripes, apparently Jack White records on vintage analog equipment. Also, I believe Primus' Brown Album was recorded on vintage analog but the CD sounds like fucking ass (I'm guessing mastered too loud). Nice list of vinyls, by the way

CD's they sound better and are more convenient plus they are more sports than most vinyl....especially mostr original 80's thrash releases are far harder to find on CD than on vinyl!

I do have 500 LP's though and approx 100 pic discs I love the larger artwork on vinyl!

Well, granted, some recordings on antique analogue recording gear sounds shit but so do some recordings on state of the art digital recording gear but if that was your point then you were stating the obvious.

CD's - they don't wear out !!!! Vinyl is better for the packaging, but play a record about 30 times over and (eventually) you are going to screw up a track with scratches of whatever else.......
