Okay. There are just too fucking many to choose from and I cannot decide on which to get first. I only have Hymns To Victory, so far. i.e. "greatest hits"??

Anyways, I am torn between the Atreus Acts I & II, Marriage of Heaven & Hell I & II, and Invictus (if I can find for a decent price!!).

Invictus seems like it would be most up my alley although the stroyline of Atreus I & II cd's seems divine. Definitely CD's that you would need to take time to absorb and follow the lyrics, etc from what I have read as the singer takes on different roles, etc.

Knowing that I am a fan of the "rawer/barbaric" styles of Trad. Metal, would I enjoy this as much? Do tell...

I'm guessing that only IoTS and 'Gugs would be able to help me here but I may be surprised.

Thanks nignogs.

As i said in your "Battle Metal" thread.

Also, of course VIRGIN STEELE, their older and classic albums (especially "Guardians Of The Flame" and "Noble Savage"), talk about battles, war, etc, but they are not as "barbaric" as Doomcifer wants, cause their influences are bands like Rainbow, Queen and although they remind Manowar sometimes, they are not really influenced by them. Also they might have 4-5 EPIC songs per album, but there will be another 3 about how good David Defeis is in bed. I like ALL their albums (except "Life Among The Ruins") and the ones i mentioned before i highly recommended, also "Marriages Of Heaven And Hell" (part 1 and 2, but 2 is better) and the first "House Of Atreus" album, which is 100% epic, but the band has like.. at least 5 albums better than this one. Jack Starr (the band's original guitar player, and main composer of "Guardians Of The Flame) created BURNING STAR, who have released a series of killer albums, the best being "No Turning Back" , not many songs about battle, but the overall feeling is of battle-ish pure u.s. power metal .

Beware of Invictus. It is indeed a very epic and a wonderfull album, but it has a great deal of keyboards, that i don't know if you will dig. The ideal for a start is probably "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell pt II", although it is not their best. If i had to choose for THE ONE BEST, that would be "Guardians Of The Flame". Seeing how much you dig ancient greek history/mythology, yes you should go for "House Of Atreus" because you will love the story too..go for everything the band released actually.. (except "Life Among The Ruins")

Gee, thanks! That narrows it down! Guardians of The Flame, eh? Watch, I'm gonna say fuckit and order like 6 of em all at once. Just go apeshit even though I have been spending way too much money lately and have too much music to listen to anyway. :p

Edit: Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of keyboards in Traditional Metal unless they are done RIGHT ala Airged Lamh, Old Season, and a couple others that elude me at the time.

In case you're playing dense ;)

In no order:
Invictus
House of Atreus, Pt. I
House of Atreus, Pt. II

Nothing else is essential, though the Marriage... albums are good (nowhere near great), despite what SOME might say.

What on earth? Have I walked into the Wintersun thread again?

Doomcifer - the first thing you need to do is buy BOTH House of Atreus parts 1 AND 2. It is EVERYTHING *you're* looking for. I don't know how to emphasize this any FURTHER except for this mix of UPPER CASE, bold, and italics. :loco:

As you know, I recently got the first two albums from nate and they are nothing like the latter epic / battle / historic metal stuff that appeared on Atreus. I'd also say Atreus pt 2 is just a tad better than part 1 only because it has a fuller production.

I have to assume IoftheStorm is recommending Guardians of the Flame because he has some sentimental attachement to it -- otherwise I don't doubt his knowledge of this genre. But to be perfectly honest, Guardians sounds dated I'm afraid.

Furthermore, it's evident that David DeFeis didn'tt quite have his vocal chops on the earlier stuff. Aside from the fact that music is practically hard rock, he sounds like an early incantation of Tobias Sammet (really quick and undulating vibrato).

If you hear him on Atreus, you'll be blown away. I've heard people say he has one of the best vocals in the business based on these albums alone.

I vote part 2 only because I know Mark voted for part 1. Both are essential.

I rest my case.

So the only actualy negative thing that you have to say about "Guardians.." is that "it sounds dated". Ok.
..

About DeFeis' voice, i seriously can't believe what you write. His outstanding screams in "Guardians.." and the crystal tone of his voice simply can't be compared with his vocals in an album almost 20 years later. And btw i think that his best vocals are found in "Age Of Consent".
I leave the part about "music is practically hard rock" without a comment.

Well, that aside, based on your own descriptions and from what Doomcifer is looking for, I don't think anyone would dispute him starting with Atreus 1 & 2, right?

It just surprises me that you would then vote for Guardians in the poll, almost as if you voted for your personal favourite over what was actually being asked. Am I wrong?

"House of Atreus" are different albums from everything the band did before. It is a sort of experiment, compared to their previous works. I love both albums, but as i said in my first post, i would recommend something else for a start, something more powerfull, simple and straight forward (like "The Marriages..2" btw). Generally i have a rule, that it is better to start with the "classics", and this rule is applied here too. The most epic, emotional, classical and fan/live favourite songs of V.S. are found in the albums from "Guardians.." until the 2 "Marriage.." albums, these songs made me (and most V.S. fans) LOVE the band. If you get your hands in this material, you will appreciate the quality, and understand all the reasons behind the creation of "House.." more. And of course (as i wrote before) the bast majority of V.S. discography is a MUST, if you are into melodic heavy metal that is full of lyricism.

About the votes, i would vote for more than 1, but i couldnt. "Guardians." was just the one i voted first. Also since you insist on the "what was actually being asked" topic, you believe that all these interludes and piano/keyboard moments of "House.." are what Doomcifer wants?

I do -- only because the interludes give the overall impression of a cinematic piece, or stage opera. Of course when you combine the interludes with the actual songs, you get an overall EPIC feeling to the concept albums and I think that's what Doomcifer might be after based on his recent listening AND reading habits.
