Anyone got some good advice to mix vocals? I got a little burned out on a mix. Trying to get all the instuments to stay clear with a guitar solo under the vocals. everything seems to be fighting each other.

If the vocal is more important than the solo then pan the solo away and keep the vocals in the centre

if there are 2 guitarists in the band just chuck the solo on the left or right and the rhythm on the opposite side and the vocal in the centre

You should be fine with using panning IF u only have the above problems when the solo and vocals are clashing together

Copy the guitar solo to a new track, so that you have

Track 1: Vocal
Track 2: Guitarsolo
Track 3: Guitarsolo Copy

Now add a little chorus and maybe a short (or in this case even long) delay on the copy and pan the solo tracks L/R (as hard as you want).

That should instantly center your vocals and put the solo around it without moving the solo to one side only.

This is a little bit more general but try to boost at like 2.5k, 4k and 8k on the vocals to make them stick out more than the solo. Also try to get the solo to be more of a low-mid/hi-mid (or whatever you prefer) sound than the vocals. The panning is a great idea in the other posts too and helps clean stuff up a lot.

I don't know if you have the plug but I had a lot of success with the Waves Supertap2 on a section with a guitar lead and vox. I had the Supertap delays panned at like +15 and -15 to give the vocal a wider feel than the solo. Turn the feedback off though and only have the delays at like 4 and 2ms and gain at like -14db or so that it isn't too distracting. Then I had this fed into the reverb unit. It made it seem like the solo was under the vocal since the vocal was a lot "wider" even though you could hear both clearly. Goodluck man!
