Vocalbooth

The difference in sound is HUUUUGE. Since the normal vocalmikes still hear all the boomy and boring stuff at the back of the capsule it can hear a lot of weird shit going on in the room. When you tighten up the room around the mike with very absorbing soft material, it´s getting closer to the sound the microphones had in the "flat chamber" where they were "concieved"
it also allows the singer to stand a little bit further away from the mike without letting too much early reflections blend with the direct sound.

Has anybody noticed lately that when you watch a band in the studio nowadays, the singer always seems to be singing right in the control room with everybody in the room? (Take the new Metallica studio clips, for example, although I've seen a lot of others too...) At first I thought it was scratch tracks, but then you'll see whoever it is writhing around and getting into it like they are performing...

What the hell happened to wanting a good vocal sound?

I've found many ways to get a good vocalsound, but generally the trick is having a dead room for the mic and vocalist, no fancy stuff needed tho, just do something with a matress and stuff.
