France’s Von Sirius are an intriguing band, largely because there is no information about them on the internet – or on their press release – and they don’t have a website. Their music very much reminds me of Death In June at times, being a mix between late 80’s electronics/darkwave and gothic metal. The vocals are very low register singing, with occasional death influenced growls introducing pleasant variety. Strong atmosphere comes courtesy of the prominent keyboards, with a variety of synth through to sitar and organ tones, while melodic, chunky riffs keep the sound relatively heavy. Programmed drums can lack innovation, but serve their purpose, and the bass has presence, but does little more than provide a low-end.
All in all, The Mystical Doktryn Of Spiritual Accomplishment is a solid, interesting album, but perhaps an acquired taste. There are plenty of ideas on display, and, although the songs can be somewhat formulaic, they generally hold your interest. Atmospheric, and well written tracks, are completed by decent production. Von Sirius show promise, and are worth checking out for goth metal fans.
