Welcome Back Cythraul!

ANUS basically invented in-crowd metal taste, and they thrive on objectively ahistorical falsehoods. They've been shitposting their retarded opinions before the internet even existed. Just because they happen to enjoy some albums that a lot of people enjoy doesn't mean they have good taste, anyone can champion Slayer. Praising them is a sign that you have the musical maturity of an adolescent. Get your own opinions.

the community is exactly as guilty of sheeplike behaviour as the people they preach against, but they've consistently been the most useful/reliable source for extreme metal tbh, even/especially nowadays. my impression is a lot of albums that are Internet Canon would still be fairly unknown without them. plus they relentlessly war against SJWs so you cunts should all love them.

i love that this discussion is happening in a cythraul thread btw lol

I think a lot of ANUS/DMU stuff from Brett Stevens and David Rosales is really good but it annoys me when some of the others think writing edgy and sardonic things is enough to be interesting. Usually those two guys did it with humor and had actual interesting things to say but the Daniel Maraat guy who 'runs' deathmetal.org now is terrible.

Supposedly this is Vijay Prozak/Brett Stevens. Apparently his real name is Chris Blanc and he looks like your average autistic metal dork which is kind of surprising.

Pretty sure I was way late on the ANUS train like ten years ago or so when that was really taken flight. I've red a few things on it every once in awhile when it was linked but , otherwise idk. Guess I was over people already quoting them every time anyways, so didnt feel the need to read them as much.

lol at someone else remembering his name is chris blanc. i periodically call him by that name on facebook, i don't get the impression he likes it very much. i also used to refer to falconsbane (one of prozak's buddies) by his real name on here and he threatened to sue deron if he didn't delete my posts haha.

there was always a joke that all the different writers on anus are all just prozak and all the forum posters were also him, and also that he died decades ago and his prozak accounts have just been taken over by various people. that conservationist guy has definitely pretended to be prozak in the past iirc, if anyone remembers him. the mac bong pic is definitely him though, there were a couple of others floating around on the internet back in the day. the mystique surrounding him was always pretty entertaining to me, and kinda deserved although his metal reviews will forever be dogshit lol

anus was basically the alt-right about 15 years before the alt-right became a thing, anyways. a lot of the alt-right related stuff i've read has echoed anus to an eerie extent. i assume the current alt-right movement, such as it is, has generally crappier taste in music tho

agree about daniel maraat btw

The alt right is super watered down neoreaction - watered down with a mix of rightwing conspiracy culture, white nationalism, redpillers, and economic populism. Since there is a white nationalist overlap in the Venn, that would explain the ANUS connection.

I never noticed as much political stuff from them until recently. The alt-right stuff seems mainly in response to the current SJW movement being roughly analogous to the PMRC of the 80s, grumpy women and wimpy men attacking their pet hobby. I never spent more than 30 seconds reading about their philosophy and shit though.

There's like two new ANUSites that just sprung up on M-A. It's amazing that a cult of personality can build so strongly around some random dude with opinions on the internet. I've always thought that if I got kicked out of the house and became a welfare recipient, I'd spend my free time getting back into the proxy IP business and creating both supportive and antagonistic sock puppets to agree and argue with myself. Would be a lot of fun. I definitely think there's a bit of that going on with ANUS.

I dunno, I think they just happened to beat the others to the punch. There's still "internet canon" being created today, e.g. stuff like Aspid.

It's much more murkier than you characterise it though because it's begat via internet trolling culture, so it's fundamentally a wild card political phenomenon I think. What with the nature of trolling being an inability to differentiate between genuine belief and disingenuousness.

they were always political in terms of rejecting the liberal narrative etc, but yeah all this overt anti-SJW stuff is a more recent thing. prozak was obsessed with #metalgate for a while, probably still is.

ANUS has a religious kind of appeal i think. young people who are aware of how so many conventional perspectives are bullshit and getting into extreme metal as a result, suddenly see their feelings put into words like that (albeit in that clumsy prozak prose haha), it has a big impact. it's just massively appealing to alienated suburban BM/DM-loving teenagers. the worry is when you've got these smarmy 40 year olds still acting like metal is the pinnacle of high art and ANUS is the truth or something lol.

but yeah they infiltrated a lot of metal communities around the mid'00s, turning these communities into an us vs. them battle and causing a lot of vehement arguments, and all the while spreading some pretty obscure extreme metal stuff around. i definitely think they had a major impact in terms of spreading some kvlt stuff around the web - maybe it would've happened anyway, but probs not as quickly.

ANUS was never white nationalist either though, or at least they claimed not to be. it had a lot of white nationalist tagalongs in more or less the same way as the alt-right. they were also among the first communities to knowingly use 'trolling' as an ideological weapon as far as i know. and they cited evola as an important influence, which i've read a few times with the alt-right also. i keep noticing parallels for sure, there's been other stuff i'm forgetting at this moment.
