Mike Meyer of the Illinois Entertainer recently conducted an interview with OTEP frontwoman Otep Shamaya. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On the subject of women in heavy metal;

"I hate these kinds of interviews. I'm a woman. I sing in a band. And it's unique and rare and all that, but it isn't to me. It's just who I am. It's my existence. Sorry if I seem a little curt, but it's just frustrating."

On being criticized on web sites like BLABBERMOUTH.NET for having a name that closely resembles OPETH (a longtime Swedish metal act) and for her "fake" death grunts:

"Here it is in a nutshell: It terrifies the boys' club that they're going to lose an inch of power to someone like me. It terrifies them to the core, because all they have is this illusion of being superior. And once that illusion breaks down, they're left with the reality. And the reality is that they're not."

On the fact that that most of OTEP's new CD, "The_Ascension", waves goodbye to metal music:

"Alternative is what we do. We're the alternative. If there's anyone trying not to stay within genre limits or be defined by a specific idea, it is definitely our intention to do exactly that and not be considered a metal band. There's this bubble that metal lives in that is very restrictive and exclusive, even though it's now supposed to be the outlaw music. It's just a big frat club. I don't need any of that."

Never liked Otep. Yet there is a certain validity in her point.

There have been women in metal for a very long time. There may not be so many, but it's not like we don't accept them into the scene.

I also wonder how she can wave goodbye to metal, when Otep is about as metal as Linkin Park is.

I meant to her point about metal being a frat club and fairly self-contained in scope.

her point would be even more valid if there were any chick bands that didnt suck.

edit: i thought you meant her point about how guys are afraid of chicks because they're some kind of threat for some reason

Though to be fair, women in metal is not by any means status quo, unless you're the bassist for Bolt Thrower and don't get any regard because you never drew attention to yourself.

Was not aware the bassist was female. I suppose this is a good thing, since most of the females in metal seem to be attention whores.

Electric Wizard has a girl too. im not saying chicks suck at music, just the all-female and female-fronted 'metal' bands.

I think metal is very versatile. Bands can mix almost every other musical genre and get praise and respect from metalheads.

I hear she's one of the most unshowered people in the metal scene hahaha

But what about Doro and Sabina? They get loads of respect.

They can... but they are just as (and are more often) likely to be seriously derisive. Look at the threads referencing most any band on this very forum.

I don't see so many people bashing bands like Melechesh, Solfeald, Winds, Spastic Ink, Cynic, Death or Moonsorrow, all of which sound completely different but still metal.
Even Opeth and Dream Theater, for every metalhead that bashes them, another one or two praise them.

Even so, people still respect them for their contributions to metal.
