What do At the Gates and Helloween have in common?

So should I make a CD-R for ya? More than anything, I'd like to hear your opinions on stuff you haven't heard before...perhaps even ask you to review something you wouldn't normally look into...
GIMME GIMME GIMME!!! :)

Just made BWBK's album of the month by the way....
You want me to send you the promo? It's good, just not original in any sort of way. The guitar solos are cool, but the rehashed nature may make you angry again. :Spin:

OK! This should be fun for me actually - lets me go through stuff and pick out my faves.

Nah man, that's cool. You see, I get the feeling you might be new to the melo-death scene and so a lot of it might sound new'ish to you (which is cool) but seriously, I think I'll stick with the originals. I just need a break.

Thanks for the offer of the promo though. Hey man, if there is a promo I wouldn't mind, it would be the new Antimatter.... :D And likewise, if you want any of my promos (like I said in that e-mail I sent to everyone), just let me know ok?

By the way NAD, since you seem to like melo-death, I'm assuming you have heard stuff like Dark Tranquility - The Gallery or Skydancer, and early In Flames? Eucharist is also very excellent, but difficult to find.

Yes and no really. I've been listening to it for nearly a decade, but when it's 1994, you're 15 with no car to go to local shows, your friends don't like death metal, and there is no widespread internet to find new bands, the selection is a bit limited. I used to make blind purchases by bumming rides off my mom to the local record store and look for the creepiest cover, band logo, or song titles. :D

I'm somewhat familiar with Dark Tranquility and have been meaning to pick their stuff up, just haven't done it yet. Old In Flames I'll eventually get to, a few people have told me to get the old stuff since the Jester's Race isn't exactly my thing.

I'll send you the Antimatter promo with the KC CD-R, I'm still waiting for that damn digipack though, d'oh.

Well ten years is longer than me by far. But how do you listen to something for a decade and manage to miss DT and IF dare say?

No rush - I have too many unwrapped CD's as is. Send when you wanna send it (once you get the digipak).

You know Prophecy Productions sell the digipak version, and if you don't want to order from them in Germany, you could write to Andreas or Tomer at The End and get them to order it in (since they are the NA distro for PP).

Like I said man, no outlet for new music. Headbanger's Ball was cancelled in what, '95? I always hated metal magazines (the only ones I ever saw were fucking pinup pussy bullshit), and the guitar mags I read didn't cater to extreme metal. Plus I was more focused on grindcore then anyhow. :)

I'll write Andreas man, thanks.

OK so are you saying that you got into 'metal' in general ten years ago, or specifically the 'melodic death metal' scene that started in Gothenburg - because I'm not even sure if it was about 10 years ago, heh.

Put it this way, what was the first melo-death album you listened to, and when?

Carcass - Heartwork in '94 (not Gothenburg I know, but still melodic death), and At The Gates and Dissection I got into probably in '96. I think those 3 groups comprised my melo-death collection for a good many years afterwards.

Cool. And welcome to the Mindcrime.

Wait for "Spreading the Disease". Ugh, it just throws me back each and every fucking time. Turn up the volume for that one, especially for the bit where he sings "she's sister mary now her eyes as cold as ice, he takes her once a week on the altar like a sacrifiiiiiiiiicccceeeee - spreading the diseeeease"!

Shit man, got goose bumps just thinking of it.

Grrrr walked away for awhile, talked to someone, blah blah blah. Experience is ruined, and Spreading the Disease was two tracks ago while I was in someone else's office. D'oh.

Alright, after listening to Omnium Gatherum again a few more times (not the original Australian technical death metal band, but the other one that stole the name), I'll admit I don't mind the following tracks:

Deathwhite
The Perfumed Garden
Son's Thoughts
It Shines

The rest is ad naueseum Slaughter of the Soul bollocks. And so it still doesn't qualify as the melo-death album to save the genre, but it's not a complete disaster either.

NAD - I do assume you own Slaughter of the Soul, right...?

That wasn't me who said it saved the genre, I said it pushed boundaries. :p So you were able to go back and listen to it then? So you'd give it a 4/10 instead of a 2/10? :D

Oh yeah, and Operation: Mindcrime owns. Not something I'll listen to every day, but definitely glad I have it.

It pushes bowel chutney.

I'd give it a 5/10 = average. Some good songs, some plain horrible songs - like the first one. They made the biggest mistake putting "Writhen" in at the top of the album.

Oh yeah, and Operation: Mindcrime owns.
That's called pushing boundaries....

So do you own Slaughter of the Soul?

Yeah, SotS was my intro to the whole Gothernburg scene many years ago. I love the album, but I like Terminal Spirit Disease better. I have yet to get the first three, probably very soon though.

Bowel chutney... you're so funny. You know what it is I really like about OG is the production. Whenever I listen to that CD I feel like I'm being drawn into their realm, not quite sure how to explain it. The whole emotional thing ya know?

That's cool - I'm glad you like it.

My real beef isn't with OG at all though - this thread was just me ranting on about people who diss power metal (or whatever) for being unimaginative, and yet claim melodic death to be some new cure for cancer.

So does water. Well, it can.

So where's my Power Metal Supremecy Listening Experience By JayKeeley's Mean Mean CD Machine then? :D

After seeing your top ten guitarists list, and comparing it to mine, I think I might be wasting both our time. :D

And to Dreamlord's point, I agree. But just like Melodic Death metal, there was a time (and there are on-going moments) where even Power Metal can shine.

Hey 6 out of 10 were recording before 1990! :)
