What is this guitar technique?

Umm... does anybody know of any other techniques on the guitar other than the ones I listed above? By the way, I don't like people who don't listen to metal, at all!

well there are quite a few other techniques that none of you guys out there mentioned... weirdly enough, these techniques are the coolest... and therefore the hardest to play:

1) String Skipping.... i assume the name obviously explains what it's all about. This technique is really very famous... most important guitarist to use and abuse this technique is probably Paul Gilbert :headbang:

2) A derivative of the above technique.... but much much tougher: String Skipping Tapping !!! marvelous technique... requires alot of speed, accuracy, and a hell-lot of cleanliness (LOL)... to be effective ofcourse... the most famous musician known for this technique is non other than the great MJR... ie: Michael Romeo :worship:

3) Another cool technique... besides alternate, economy, and sweep picking... we have the famous circular picking !!! yeah, you think i'm bull-shitting you guys... but it's out there... and the most famous guy to use it is YJM... Yngwie Malmsteen... the basic idea is playing arpeggios using circular motion rather than moving in normal rhythmic ups and downs!!! especially played when sweeping on the last 3 strings (G, B, e). I think it's more effective to play circular picking on the last 3 strings... but it's damn hard using the whole fretboard !!!

4) last technique i'm going to give you guys !!! ... very weird technique... not many know it... very few use it.... purpose of this technique is showing off (LOL) !!! the point is to mute your fretboard using your right hand... on like the 5th-6th fret... then playing legato all over the fretboard with your left hand!!! great technique... makes the people watching go crazy !! but i have no idea what it's called... Joe Satriani did this once in the latest G3 with Steve and Ynqwie... so check it out if you like... oh yeah, Jason Becker used to be really great at it as well (LOL).... true fact: he even once replaced muting the fretboard with his right hand by holding a yo-yo and playing with it while he shred-legato-ed the whole fretboard with his left hand.... kind of scary if you ask me !!! :D

Damn, music has taken a very very bad direction. That would be great for a circus though. (No offense towards Becker of course)

Its called being a good performer. Paganini did shit like that, its nothing remotely new. Stupid trick? Yup. Any musical merit? Nope. Does it look cool to an audience? Absolutely.

Maybe to you. To me it's called show off.

What exactly did he do? Just curious.

Anyway, if you're impressed by stuff like that, good for you. Not that I prefer musicians sitting on a chair playing their instrument livelessly, but shit like Yo-yoing, biting, scratching and sexually harassing your instrument are just crap to me.

I did a report on him in high school...I remember reading that he would do things like make his violin sound like animal noises, or rip all the strings off of his violin but one and continue the piece while only playing on one string.

Its not even a matter of being impressed...like Ptah said, its showmanship. Its stupid crap to make the audience go "oooh that looks cool." Forget about Becker...someone like Steve Vai does this stuff more than anyone. The fan dramatically blowing his hair back while he plays, the flashy rockstar clothes, the laser pointers he'd strap on his fingers while playing bad horsie, or the light up frets on his guitar...not to mention stuff like swinging the guitar around his neck by the strap.

If you don't like it, thats fine, but I just hope you aren't implying that it makes someone any less of a musician for it ;)

Well, the stuff about Paganini is cool and at least related to music in a much closer way than what Vai or Yngwie for example do on scene. What those guys do is part of the whole "rock star" attitude which to me is just crap. You can live without it.

Of course not... I referred to that from the first post. I'm not judging skills or anything related to that, and who am I to judge Becker by any chance?:)

Yeah that sounds like he's talking about economy picking..

Note for thread starter: Hybrid picking, is when you use a combination of pick and fingers to pluck the strings. It's a pretty country kinda technique I guess. Can be great fun, not that i'm any good at it. :Spin:

It's called Chickin Pickin'!! Zakk Wylde does it occasionaly.

Ahahahaha that silly Zakk Wylde! Other than the annoying overuse of cool sounding pinch harmonics, I think he's really good.

You should enter his name in google video search, the first video is of him in '89 doing around a 9 minute solo

I like the hybrid picking idea, and I forgot to mention 2 hand tapping. Yes, I am quite good at 2 hand tapping. what in the hell is legato? That's the big one I think I should know.

all eight fingers kinda two handed tapping? legato style is played with out a pick. just a series of hammerons and pulloffs. or you can pick the first note on every string but thats panzy.

LMAO first time I've ever heard someone use the word "panzy" on a forum! Umm... as for tapping, not all 8 fingers :erk: , right now at most 6 (which is still more than usual!)
