well there are quite a few other techniques that none of you guys out there mentioned... weirdly enough, these techniques are the coolest... and therefore the hardest to play:
1) String Skipping.... i assume the name obviously explains what it's all about. This technique is really very famous... most important guitarist to use and abuse this technique is probably Paul Gilbert
2) A derivative of the above technique.... but much much tougher: String Skipping Tapping !!! marvelous technique... requires alot of speed, accuracy, and a hell-lot of cleanliness (LOL)... to be effective ofcourse... the most famous musician known for this technique is non other than the great MJR... ie: Michael Romeo
3) Another cool technique... besides alternate, economy, and sweep picking... we have the famous circular picking !!! yeah, you think i'm bull-shitting you guys... but it's out there... and the most famous guy to use it is YJM... Yngwie Malmsteen... the basic idea is playing arpeggios using circular motion rather than moving in normal rhythmic ups and downs!!! especially played when sweeping on the last 3 strings (G, B, e). I think it's more effective to play circular picking on the last 3 strings... but it's damn hard using the whole fretboard !!!
4) last technique i'm going to give you guys !!! ... very weird technique... not many know it... very few use it.... purpose of this technique is showing off (LOL) !!! the point is to mute your fretboard using your right hand... on like the 5th-6th fret... then playing legato all over the fretboard with your left hand!!! great technique... makes the people watching go crazy !! but i have no idea what it's called... Joe Satriani did this once in the latest G3 with Steve and Ynqwie... so check it out if you like... oh yeah, Jason Becker used to be really great at it as well (LOL).... true fact: he even once replaced muting the fretboard with his right hand by holding a yo-yo and playing with it while he shred-legato-ed the whole fretboard with his left hand.... kind of scary if you ask me !!!
