What is this Jordi?!

Check out the Eurovision thread. While I don't really get what Eurovision is, I suspect it's the European version of American Idol. Or American Idol is the US version of Eurovision. Anyways. Lordi won it and I suspect that's the hype. I'm still trying to figure out the hype over Wolfmother myself.

Have you sampled any of their stuff?
Fucking rubbish...

Eurovision is not really like American Idol. This is how Eurovision works:
Every little country is Europe selects an own song they want to present at the Final Eurovision Contest. That can be a song from a very popular singer/ band or somebody who is compelety unknown, doesn´t matter. In Germany for example it is a TV show where the people can call and vote, in other countries Radio stations, or an especially put together jury selects the song. Then there are some Europewide pre-qualifications for the final contests, and at the end 24 countries are left. Every country now performs in a big Eurowide broadcasted TV show their song, for Finnland it was Lordi. After every song was performed, the people at home can vote for their favorite song (but not for their own country !). Finally every country announces their votes by giving 1-12 points (like 1 point for Greece, 2 points for Russia, 3 points for Sweden ... 10 points for Finnland and 12 points for Germany (unfortunately nobody gave us 12 points though  ) . All countries vote, not only the ones taking part in the final show, so in total I think it was 36 European countires that voted. That make it really fun to watch !

This contest excists since sometime in the 60ies I think. At that time it was really traditional with rather strict rules, like every country had to perform a song in their own language etc. 1972 ABBA won as a completely unknown band for Sweden with Waterloo and started their world-carrier at Eurovision.
Meanwhile, it is more or less a pop show with background dancers in short skirts without real rules (70% sing in English, nationality of the performer doesn´t matter etc etc. Germany this year performed (a really good !!!!) country song with an American front singer ... not really what you expect of Germany), and every country votes for their neighbor country. So real excitement is gone I find. However, Lordi/ Finnland won clearly and received good points from actually all nations.

I saw Lordi last year on the TV, some festival highlights, I can't remember which one it was but they were really good, I was quite impressed by them.

The night of the Eurovision Contest I was out at MSG but when I went back to the pub, they had the TV on and Lordi had just won and I heard the song and I'm glad it was a rock band who won rather than the usual chronic crap, but I didn't think much of the song at all. In fact it was shite. But I only heard it once and I wasn't paying too much attention to it, so I'd need to hear it again before I could fully comment on it.

Now that Wolfmother - they are a great band. I've heard about 5 of their songs and they are all rockin. They played here about a month ago but Whole Lotta Led were playing on the same night and I went to see Led. With hindsight I should have picked Wolfmother but I'd seen Led before and they are brilliant. But I'll definitely check out Wolfmother next time they come to Glasgow.

Lordi was (almost) the only band actually playing instruments, this very reason alone deserved a prize in the crapfest the Eurovision is known to be :D

GO LORDI!

Yes Baldyboy I think it was the Download highlights that I had been watching. There wasn't that many bands that I was interested in but I was watching it mainly to see that band which I can't remember the name of just now, but the singer used to be a pornstar and he was doing some sort of stunt like being suspended from the rafters with meathooks in his back and he was going to perform the whole set like that. That was the main reason I watched it and it looked damn sore I have to say lol!!!!!! I heard a couple of Lordi's songs and I thought they were pretty good. What band are you in?

And look what I've just heard about a few minutes ago:-

Eurovision winners and metal monsters LORDI have announced their first ever Scottish date.

They play The Garage on Monday 30th October, support to be confirmed
.

Hmmm interesting - my rock n roll diary is free for the 30th October as well, I might just think about going along and checking these dudes out!!!!

And probable as bad as them, didn't waste my time listening or anything. I'm not suprised they hit Eurovision. You'll never see a real metal band hit on a show like that and thanks God for it!

I kill myself the day metal become mainstream, I love the exclusivity of our club. If I like to be mass I will listen to pop :puke:

Stupid ass image...
That alone turns me off...
I'm surprised the Euros fell for this shit, I though they were so beyond that...

mmm, think you look at it a bit the wrong angle....
Eurovision is about a bunch of old farts that clearly earn the shit with this contest. Since decades this contest has received the biggest broadcast you can imagine on European television. Okay, the music may have sounded up to date in the 60's and early 70's, but they kept on pushing this "Eurovision" sound on our TV's for years now and people got so tired of this ...Lordi was the band that finally blew up the icon that Eurovision had become...It's not the musical quality of Lordi that is important, that's indeed below avarage, but it's the big "Fuck Off" they gave the Eurovision organisation. They just were the voice of a zillion people from all over Europe that they were tired of the Eurovision shit. As for that I respect this band deeply, the DO turn 1000's of young kids into listening to hardrock now.... Compare them with Kiss, they also weren't the musical masters like Rush or so , but turned millions of kids into listening to hard rock (including this one...)
huhu, hope you understand the "hype" about this band a bit now...otherwise Lordi will kick your ass

trust us europeans sixx, lordi have done us a big,big favour with this!
they may not be awsome,as carnut says, but they really knock seven shades of shit out of every other band thats been in that shitty competition for years and years!

Lordi isn't another new hype band, they've been around for a few years already. Eurovision is just a big opportunity for them, they would have been stupid to refuse playing there.

Imagine a modern version of Kiss with hints of Alice Cooper and Accept and you got Lordi :p No musical link at all with Gwar. Lordi may not display exceptional musical abilities but their stuff is damn catchy! Well it works for me at least, and I'd rather have them bringing the flag of rock 'n roll to the masses than any alternative/nu rock band that lands on heavy rotation on MTV...

Sixx and Wyv, please give them a chance before judging by the looks, you know too well that metalheads are already judged badly because of their looks ;) You might be surprised.

Sorry Flo but I'm pretty squared when it comes to it. I do like Alice because the guy was an innovator and his music/lyrics rules, but stuff like Kiss, Gwar, Lordi, Slipknot, corpsepaint just make me :ill: .

My vision is that metal is all about the music not the looks or even the act, and that can go too for big sets like Maiden used to carry around or Judas motorbike gimmick, or Ritchi Blackmore breaking guitars on stage. All that is absolutely unnecesary to me. I prefer a longer set and just the band playing with heart and soul.

The question stiil remains, did Lordi won because of the music or the looks?
