I prefer mahogany, it has a deep sound and it's "darkness" can be offset or complimented with the correct pickup choice. I've owned basswood and poplar bodied guitars and didn't like them as much. Mahogany also seems to show more of a change when swapping pickups which to me is desireable. Currently I own 6 guitars, threee of which are mohogany.
Ibanez RBM1 , RBM10 and a SA-160QMTG..

I personally prefer alder. its balanced really nicely and the weight is pretty light. Theres a few places online where you can read the different tonal aspects of tonewoods.

I've heard Cherry sounds quite similar to ALder, but a little fuller and clearer.

I have alder, and other ones that I don't know. Alder is nice, but I wanted something that would sing a little more. I got Swamp Ash for my new guitar. It should be interesting with the pickups I got.

BTW we all want resonant woods and at the end we all finish them with polyutahrene.
Well, plastic doesn't resonate well.
