what Symphony X and George R R Martin have in common..

I don't think anyone was saying that it's the best fantasy series ever. Definetly one of the better one's tho.

i dunno, for me its the best series ever.. im still yet to find better.. but im lookin'!

yeah my bf just said he finished aGoT now and he was like 'yeah its alright, gets the job done' .. i hung up on him  nah i didn't, but i didn't tell him i loved him back! take that! lol..

but yes.. the first book is pretty much just intro.. get yourself to the 3rd book!

Quite frankly, I don't like David Eddings at all and Wheel Of Time doesn't work. Seriously, most of the main characters are just plain annoying, the base idea doesn't work in the long scale and the story has illogicalities everywhere. This is just my opinion of course, but yeah...

Definitely agree. I have the Elenium books and, to be honest, they are why I haven't picked up a fantasy book in 5 years. There are some bad sci fi books, but even the worst of them can't even hold a candle to some of the fantasy garbage out there.:Puke:

I need to pick up the 2nd set of Marvel Dark Tower comics...The Gunslinger Born was great.

I have the 2nd set. And planning to get the rest of the sets too (~30 magazines altogether). Take note that there's also a similar comic set coming for The Stand. The first one will be published in a month or so I guess. I'm ordering that one too.

Exactly. The 3rd book blew my mind.

Oops

I'll get The Long Road Home in hardback, but looks like I have to wait till October :( The Stand should be badass.

Are these series of books actually worth it?

I've never really been a very big fantasy guy, plus I work at a Barnes and Noble and the average Robert Jordan/George Martin fans we get are creepily obnoxious, but I've heard some cool things about these books.

The only "fantasy" books I've read are the Harry Potter and Dresden Files series, which are nothing more than fun popcorny tasting books (no matter how engrossing I find them).

Also, I've heard that either the 4th or 5th book (don't remember which) in the Dark Tower series starts with 300 pages of a guy walking through the desert. Truth to this rumor?

I wasn't a fantasy guy either, until I read GRRM and realized that there's actually well-written fantasy out there.

That would have to be the first book (The Gunslinger), but there's a little more to it that that ;) Also, you have to consider that when King originally wrote that book, it was very early on in his career, so his writing style evolved significantly since that edition...still a good book, but the others are better.

hey i normally find fantasy pretty shit too, the great thing about martin is his fantasy aspects are rather subtle and done in such a way that when it happens your mind is like 'woah did that really just happen?' because it's pretty much just a medieval alternate history with a few fantasy elements. definately the core of the story is about noble houses fighting and undermining each other for power.

what the fuck are these Twilight books that are suddenly so popular? I looked up the synopsis and nearly shot Tequila through my nose. Vampire love triangle? How many movies and soap operas have there been on that topic. FFS let it rest. If this is the new teen craze, all I have to say is it's a step down from Harry Potter and on the same level as Danny B

:OMG: [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Twilight-Book-1-Stephenie-Meyer/dp/0316160172[/ame]

Look at all of the reviews... It wasn't up until about 3 minutes ago that I had actually heard about them. They look pretty stupid to me.:Puke:

Amazon is full of shit reviews anyway. Well, I don't give a shit about shit like that shit.

Anyone ever read Forgotten Realms? Now, those books are shit. I mean, they were alright when I was like 12 or whatever, but even early Dragonlance books were more believable in terms of story and characters... Speaking of early Dragonlance, it's funny how you can clearly see the roleplaying influences in the first books (as the series was started from a roleplaying game). I think you can actually see where the dices were thrown if you read carefully enough.

But what else is there... I think Tad Williams - Memory, Sorrow and Thorn was good. Actually, I heard it influenced George R R Martin too and it's atleast partly thanks to the series that he started SoIaF.

i know my bf keeps telling me to read the book, he reckons its really well written, but i opened up a random page when we were at the bookstore the other day and i didnt think it seemed as good as what he said, but i think its aimed more at teeny's
