what Symphony X and George R R Martin have in common..

i know my bf keeps telling me to read the book, he reckons its really well written, but i opened up a random page when we were at the bookstore the other day and i didnt think it seemed as good as what he said, but i think its aimed more at teeny's

OMFG STAY AWAY or your sanity will be consumed.

Memory, Sorrow & Thorn was good if a little slow and childish. The final book was a lot better than the first two.

btw, im about a chapter into 'perdido st station' by china mieville (just started on the way to work this morning) so i have no true opinion yet, and ive never been a sci fi fan at all, but i just had to say that this guys writing style is a pure joy to read (especially after i just read 5 sword of truth books beforehand lol, but lets not talk about that).. i love grrm's level of descriptiveness but mieville takes it to a whole other level of artform.. im in luuuurve.. i think i may even be able to get around the fact that the main character is having sex with a giant bug haha.. anyway so if you in any way shape or form enjoy sci fi or just plain good writing, check him out!

edit: well i dont know yet if he is the main character, he is just the first character so don't flame me ken! lol

He's the main character. Sort of. There's like a main "set" of characters. Mieville reallllllly hates government, industry, and pollution, as you've probably gotten by now.

haha yeah, i havent gotten to the gov side of things yet too much, but the way he describes the city is brilliant, i just hate that theres aliens n shit.. i find it hard to humanize them.. i just try and ignore the fact that theyre alien..

Are they alien? I think he wants to anthropomorphize like Orwell - turn people into critters that they act like. Wait till you get to the "bad guys". It's such a creepy plot. :D

And if anyone's interested, to get back on topic, I saw today at Barnes & Noble that GRRM books are among those featured in the "3 for 2" sale. So you could get most of the series for the price of half of what's published so far. (3 out of 4, for the price of 2, that is.)

is pratchett any good? i mean he has a bajillion books, but they all seem aimed at the younger audience.. is there anything he does for adults? i want thick books containing miniscule writing (so i know they had trouble containing all that information in just the one book) and storylines filled with decapitation/disembowelment/rape/debauchery/torture etc..

@ ken - well he decribes them as 'alien races' in the first chapter but no im not sure if they're meant to be alien as such as coming from other planets or anything, they're just not human..

@ zach - haha never thought i'd see you say something like that in reference to grrm, how you liking the book so far?

My first time through I read the prologue and the first chapter and went "OMG MULTIPLE STORY LINES!!! AAARRRRGGGHHHHH *head explode*" so i went to reading "Where the Wild Things Are" and my Nancy Drew books. Finally I decided i was ready for the big leagues.

No, seriously, i was a bit put off by the jumping around and such at first. I still am not 100% clear on who's who (Bran just got thrown off the roof at this point by the queen or some shit), but I'm following enough that what's going on makes sense.

i think who's who is quite clear.. the only 'weird' thing i guess is eddard's nickname is ned.. i know thats where some people get confused at first.. poor little bran :( he is a cutie.

No, i mean keeping them all straight. I'm like "So Jon Snow is the bastard son, who's this other Jon they're talking about? Oh, ok, so then who's this dude and that dude and..."

it's starting to fall into place. It's just the first 75 pages are almost constant introductions which keep getting me all huffy puffy.

He's written a few kids books and I haven't read them. But I've read the whole Discworld series (or what's been written so far), and that's 20+ books. Not really a series though since they been written so that you can pick up any book and start from there.

In some ways it's more modern day satire than it is a medieval comedy. But basically it's both. It's humor. If you want "adult" fantasy humor with the same kind of satire, go for Robert Rankin.

You won't find disembowelment and rape in Discworld. It's adult in the sense that you need to have the brainpower to connect and understand some of the jokes. But no adult sex/violence. Although there is violence and romance, just not that kind.

Bran got thrown off the roof by Jaime, cause he (Bran) accidentally saw Jaime and sister/queen Circe getting some incest on. I don't think this is a big spoiler cause it's right in the beginning. :)

Yeah I remember reading that part and I only read the first book and the first half of the second. I'll pick them up again when/if the series is complete.
