what's the buzz on amplitube 3?

The trouble with the free stuff is you're often left with one or two usable tones.
there is a handful of truly awesome free amp sims for sure, but that doesn't giv much versatility.

Amplitube 3 will have over 300 modelled units, if they are all of the brilliant quality shown in dimis clips then it will be a whole world of possibilities.

Yea, I get where you are coming from but you can't forgot that Dimi can make anything sound good because his technique is having a huge effect on the tone.

I'm not saying you have to be a good player to get good tones out of it. It's just that these big commercial releases like this and guitar rig give OK tone (Not guitar rig so much IMO) but not much realism in the sense of feel. I just can't see the major appeal in these expensive alternatives when some of the free ones are actually better. I can't speak for Amplitube 3 yet as I haven't tried it.

I think the free stuff is very versatile though. Especially considering that more and more are released and getting better all of the time. Add that with the huge amount of impulses that are out there.

This isn't no dig at you in anyway. I just wanted you to see my point of view.

I will be trying the demo though so I am still keeping an open mind about this release.

I see where you're coming from too :)

I think the point is that, so far, Amplitube 3 seems to be really stepping up the game in terms of realism,
I'll be the first to say that up until now Amp Sims have been pretty mediocre in those terms.

The freeware guys have the advantage of rapid development and deployment of any new ideas.
the commercial guys have the advantage of having huge resources and time to work on the models.
from the various photos that the IK Multimedia crew have been posting on Facebook and on forums, it seems like they bought an example of every good amp ever made,
took them into a lab and dissected them for painstaking modelling.

thats the kind of thing that even the most enthusiastic freeware developer could scarcely manage.

there are advantages to both ways of doing things of course.

Actually, the one major downside of the freeware guys is that none of them code for Mac systems :D

Thanks for this information..

I'll just point out that I haven't read up on Amplitube 3 whatsoever. I've listened to the clips in this thread and thats it :p

I hope this is a step forward in amp modelling but maybe not a big enough step for me to pay the price for it. I am a student afterall...

I'm also looking forward to the AxeFx plug-in which is supposedly coming out late this year or early next year from Fractal Audio.
