What's your ULTIMATE Guitar?

Well I suppose I'll scrap that idea then
I have a Hellraiser C-7 (normal frets though). Not bad with the 707s, but it's still not quite 'there' yet with the sound.
Perhaps alder with some 707s might be closer to what I'm after.

Have you tried SD actives?

Yes, I have them in one of my Ibanez guitars.
Getting quite sick of the excessive output level. Might work for some people, but I find it just isn't suitable for my needs.
That and I prefer the overall sound of EMG 707s to the Blackout AHB-1 7 string set anyway.

Have you tried the the blackout neck pup in the bridge position? I quite liked it, though I definitely prefer the EMG X series by a wide margin. Also, I've noticed the blackouts sound a bit better when you move them a little bit further away from the strings than you normally might have them set with EMG's. Can't hurt to try, but I'm guessing you've probably done all of this.

I have a relatively high string action by metal guitarist standards (much closer to medium than that super-low thing many guys do) and also didn't set the pickups too high either, so they are actually sitting quite a decent distance from the strings, and yet the output is still too much. Don't think swapping the positions of the pickups is going to help (or help enough).

Yeah, pretty much nothing you can do about the output, they are quite powerful in those regards.

Got a Bernie Rico Jr Vixen 7 coming any day now ..... (not quite what I wanted, but the price was to good to pass up) .....

minus the inlays, (going a custom design on the 11th, 12th and 13th frets), with a Vixen headstock (spalted), flame maple moduled neck, sperzel tuners, 1/2 inch spalted maple centre cap, stainless frets etc ......
Gonna be a long 2 years for the wait, but its gonna be worth it. :hotjump:
