I'm gonna be starting my desk build hopefully within the next few weeks and was trying to figure out what type of wood to go with. Should i just go and grab a few sheets of 1/2" ply or would it be better to go with MDF? Or what else would work?

And also, laminate is fucking EXPENSIVE, around here I cant find a 4x8 sheet for anything under 65 bucks, its halfway making more sense to jump on the "me too train" and pick up that $200 one from musicians friend.

I get my 4x8 sheets of 3/4 inch birch or oak ply for $29 at lowes/home depot. The lumber yard around here is even cheaper, but they are assholes to deal with.

What do you guys call this stuff?

It's real wood glued together. Sturdy, looks nice and it's cheap.

^ not a clue what that would be called

I think im gonna take a trip over to the lumber yard by me tomorrow and check out some prices on the wood.

And then hold a gun to whoever is trying to sell me 65 dollar sheets of laminate and very calmly ask him to give me a discount.
