Hey guys,

I want to first start off by saying, this forum is AMAZING. :)
I've learned so much from reading here, so I thought I'd post and show what I've learned.

I want you guys to check out my band's latest recording.
I just wanted to post the song, and get some feedback from some of you guys here.

I want ANY criticism you can possibly offer. What you LIKED or DISLIKED about the recording! Anything is appreciated. :)
I'm always striving to be better.

It's completely unmastered(apparently.. ha), but I know I do not possess the skills or work space to successfully master a song. Once I get the tracking / editing / and mixing side down, I will probably start sending my mixes off to be mastered.

I guess I can also use this post as a way to introduce myself, as well.
My name is Josh, and I got into audio production and engineering because my band had the HARDEST time trying to find a reliable and affordable studio around here. (I live in South Georgia). It was absolutely awful, so I decided to take it upon myself to record us.

Our first recording was absolutely awful. We recorded in our former bassist's living room with a 4CH Powered Mixer. It was basically the AMP for a PA.

The output went into the MIC IN input of the computer.
It sounded like butchered goat shit.

But I made it work for the time being. Eventually, I was fed up of the wall of "white noise", and I bought a FireStudio interface, and some KRK Monitors, and started trial and error with guitars, drums, etc.

And here I am today. My recordings are still on the "cut up" side, but I wouldn't say they're butchered anymore, and that makes me happy. I know I'm progressing as an engineer. :)

Anyways, I will stop rambling now.

Thank you so much for reading!
I can't wait for replies.

Thanks.

Upload the song to dropbox or soundclick and post the link. No one has commented because you put up a myspace link and the myspace player's compression skews the sound of the clip a lot. If you want useful feedback, let us hear at least a 128kbps MP3.

Welcome to the forum,

First off well done for looking for honest crit to better yourself, there's no point in hearing that you are the best AE to walk around unless you are actually there, not very helpful when people do that,

It all sounds very distant like the drums were recorded from next door,

bring the drums volume up (less reverb?) bring up the high shelf on it / remove the lowpass filter

the guitars also have a lot of low end energy that you will need to work on

the vocals to me sound great, they are just getting caught up in all the low energy from the rest of the instruments

bit more editing needs to be done on the guitars, I heard a few noises and pops in there that stick out

sorry I just read somebody posting about 128kbs being acceptable, is this 128kbs or a higher bitrate? vbr?

I'm used to 192 +, preferably 320, it doesn't take that much more room and if you can't now somewhere down the line you will hear the difference.

The drums are all sampled, except for the toms and overheads.

I couldn't get the snare to a high enough level without it clipping, and i'm not really digging the kick sample, but it's the best i've got in my arsenal right now.

I'm thinking about buying the SSD, because at the moment, i'm in no position to record legit drums. The only spot i've got to record drums at the moment is in a storage unit, and it's completely tin. (HORRID, I know.)

And I have the hardest time getting a good guitar / bass tone, and having them sit nicely together in the mix.
Any suggestions?

EDIT: It's 128kbps bitrate.
