which md421?

I may have a chance to pickup an md421. The guy is selling both an original version, and the mk2 version. Which one would you suggest? (Primarily for guitar mic)

Haven't used the original, but I've heard many people say they prefer the older models to the current version (although people love to say things like that in the recording community).

I have 3 MD421 IIs and I'm not the biggest fan of them on guitars. I'd probably go for the older version if it's in good condition.

Wouldn't mind knowing more about this myself. I see alot of old white 421's on German Ebay for not bad prices. Do they really sound that different to the current model?

We have two of each at the studio I'm at. The older ones don't have the low end rollof (not that I ever use it anyway) and they seem to have a bit less low end overall. I usually grab the newer ones first. They're both great mics though.

I had heard (not sure if it's true) that the newer ones have a 3dB boost at 5 kHz, as well...

The older ones for sure; they're more well rounded. I had a newer one, and it sounded great on toms, but forget about guitars.

the newer one has a bit more fizz I think
