Who is your "Rodney Dangerfield" band ?

I have three.

1. At Vance - Why these guys aren't more well known is beyond me! They have killer vocalist and musicians with a sound similar to Symphony X. I'm clueless as to why they're never mentioned. :erk:

2. Savatage - They have much respect here on the forum, but otherwise, nobody knows who they are! TSO is a huge deal, but when it comes to Sava Rock Operas people are like who? IMO, this band goes right up there with Iron Maiden, Dio, and Judas Priest!

3. Badlands - Ray Gillen as a vocalist and Jake E Lee as a guitarist, but relatively unknown! Absolutley unbelieveable! If you don't know who they are then check out the 1989 self titled debut. It's one of the best hard rock albums known to man!

I think Manowar are rated just fine.
Their image is going to be "love em or hate em".
They sell plenty of albums and concert tickets. No need to worry about them.
I consider myself a pretty big Manowar fan myself, but I wouldn't go out on a limb and say they are the most amazing musicians out there whose talent isn't appreciated.

I happen to like MANOWAR and I think they get "no respect" on this forum at least. Haven said that, I can understand why they get no respect. If I had not grown up on them and had just learned of them I seriously doubt that I would like them.

Well, as I said, Manowar's image are an immediate turn off to some.

I guess I didn't read this poll as who doesn't get respect "here", but in general.

I would say in general, Manowar receive a fair amount of respect in the metal community.

I felt these guys were building with each release... up to 2002, when they put out Only Human, which was an excellent power metal disc. After that... I know Olaf Lenk was always the main guy behind the band, but when Hartmann left before the following album, and the entire rest of the band left before the next one, they started to seem more like "Olaf and some guys" than "At Vance"... and the songwriting sorta went downhill too IMO.

I'm surprised that people are mentioning Savatage in this thread. They aren't among the biggest metal bands in the world, but consider... they were playing US power metal (not "hair metal") in the 80's, then by the early 90's they transitioned into a more operatic style... just as the rock music scene was moving to a more basic, stripped down mode, with the likes of Nirvana. Yet, Savatage is still somewhat known outside of metal circles, and is largely revered within metal circles. Hardly a band deserving of a "doesn't get respect" award.

I don't think Badlands is the kind of band that failed to get proper recognition... they broke up after 2 albums because they didn't achieve commercial success. I think "the ultimate Rodney Dangerfield band" is a band who has been toiling away for a long time, putting out consistently good stuff, but not "getting no respect". :)

I heartily agree on Poverty's No Crime. Slave to the Mind is one of my favorite all time albums. I agree on Virgin Steele too. They kill live too. They played a show at Jaxx several years ago, maybe 50 people showed up, it was really sad. That didn't stop VS though, put on a fantastic show. Unfortunately they haven't been back since even though Jay (the owner) went on stage beforehand and said something to the effect of "too bad people have such terrible taste in music, otherwise they'd be here tonight!"

Superior. Great band, great talent, but they never recovered from what was perceived as a disappointing, or at least different CD (YOUnique) after a prog-metal masterpiece (behind). Damned shame, since Ultima Ratio was an excellent return to form.

Other bands, not entirely metal, that haven't quite gotten where they've deserved: Godhead, Epsilon-Zero, Bella Morte.... Also Yeti, a Florida-based black metal band.

Freak Kitchen. But things got better in the last 12 months..... :D

Not metal, but a GREAT songwriter/musician that seems to be known in the underground circles mostly, and that is Kevin Gilbert.

I liked the band okay for awhile, then I saw them live. After that, I would never listen to them again! They bring new meaning to the word ridiculous! :Smug: I can't believe Rhapsody even wants to be associated with those clowns! :ill:

The Evil In You and Chained are both great releases even after Hartmann left.

As for Savatage, the band has been around for 25 years and are mostly unknown to the the majority of people. Unless you've been following metal for a long time.

Bandlands disbanded due to internal problems between Jake E Lee and Ray Gillen. Both wanted to make different kinds of music after they released Voodoo Highway. I understand your argument due to the lenghth of time a band has put out releases, but with that said, when a band is great, they're great! Particularly Badlands' self titled album is a cult classic and should be heard by people that didn't follow them from 1989-1993. There's some stellar, classic rock music there and deserves to be heard by the masses! Therefore, 2 albums or 20, Badlands is a "no respect" band.

Ok, first off, I love BOTH Manowar and Rhapsody.
But come on, Rhapsody is NO less ridiculous than Manowar.
It's ALL a gimmick my friend. You can not cliam your music to be "Hollywood Metal", and not consider it to be an angle to sell records.

Both bands rule, and that's all that really matters, right?

Look at my avatar.........

Power Quest! With the recent success of bands like Sonata and DragonForce, I am surprised no festival has picked up on these guys (well, they almost played Chicago Power Fest, but the line-up was booked already).

If you like flower metal with keys and an 80's flair, this band is for you.

Great choice. I saw them twice while in England and they definately didn;t disappoint. Thier 2nd CD was excellent though the 3rd one is still growing on me

I HUGELY agree with naming Superior as underappreciated or under-respected, but whileI liked "Behind" and loved "Ultima Ratio," to me their masterpiece thus far is still "YOUnique." Maybe it's because I bought that first, then bought "Behind" (and UR when it came out), but I listen to YOUnique probably 10 times as much as the other two (and I actually prefer UR to "Behind," too).

I think YOUnique "disappointed" their fans because it was COMPLETELY different from "Behind," which was a more straight ahead metal disc (by comparison). YOUnique was FAR more experimental, more polished, much more progressive, in my opinion. I'd probably rank "Nothing" (from "YOUnique") as one of my 10 or 20 favorite songs by anyone, and "YOUnique" is probably in my top 20 favorite CDs (out of over 1000).

Whichever of their CDs you prefer, Superior is an awesome band, and I'd love to see them return to ProgPower!!
