why do bands think "europe" means germany and maybe the netherlands

Nobody cares about Luxembourg :heh:

France is weird : in Paris you get most of the interesting 'underground' tours thanks to a bunch of experienced orgaziners and most of the big tours but at the same time it's no mystery that Paris is (one of) the anti-rock city (ies).

Some bands like Deicide and Impaled Nazarene get cancelled on a regular basis, especially in festivals . Ridiculous

Metal in Europe is WAAAAY bigger than here.

Some of Europe, yes.

For example, metal in the USA is waaaay more popular than it is in the UK. But then, I'm not even sure if the UK is (or wants to be) a part of Europe so that might explain it. :loco:

The same reason they think the US means California, Texas, and New York.

Come to Utah, anyone.

Youd be surprised. Nt many quality shows come through here. And if they do come through Texas, a lot of shows only hit Austin and/or Dallas. Austin because the crowd is younger and Dallas because it's much farther north.

The best is when a band annonces a US tour and only visits the New York/New England area or only visits the west coast. The middle US usually gets ignored.

Screw "economically viable". Fans are everywhere.

who told you that?!?!

when thinking where metal is bigger, you have to take ratio under consideration too.
US may be a big country, but the ratio of metal heads in every city is WAAAY
smaller than in any city there.
There is not even a single metal bar in the US, I mean, real metal bar...
but I know at least 3 in the UK...
I also know that every European tour stops in the UK at least twice,
I also know so many metal heads from there, and 2 metal magazines that are british,
clubs that only play metal,
stores only for metal cds in the heart of the city..
shall I go on?

I think the US sucks when it comes to "a metal scene"
sorry to be the barrier of bad news :/

I agree, I don't really see where you're coming from JK. This country probably does have a lot more people into the more mainstream commercial metal bands than the rest of Europe, but that's no different from the US. Most of those bands ARE American. And it's not like the underground "scene" is non-existant here.

BTW, what metal clubs are you referring to Lioness?

Nobody. I lived there for 28 years so I kinda just figured it out for myself. Now I've been living in the USA for 8 years (since 98) so I think I can make a pretty good comparison. How do you like them apples? :loco:

one of Houston's metal cd stores just closed up. shows how great the scene is down here, huh? though the fashioncore scene is flourishing.

What, being able to compare the US with the UK? OK, are you sitting comfortably? :) Here goes....

I'll tell you forever and a day, you do NOT get shows/tours in the UK like you do in the US.

First of all, while you get Bloodstock UK and crappy download festivals, the USA, meanwhile, gets ProgPower, NE Hardcore Fest, NJ Metal Fest, Milwaukee Metal Fest, Heathen Crusade, Chicago PowerFest, etc etc. Basically many more festivals. There's one coming up in Chicago with Manilla Road and Winterhawk...I forget the name of the fest.

When bands tour Europe, the UK are lucky to get a tour stop and even then it's just in London.

There are ACTIVE underground scenes here going on: old school (Slough Feg, Hammers, The Sword, etc), Black Metal (Leviathan, Xasthur, Ludicra, Wolves of the Throne Room), and so on.

There are MANY more on-line distros based in the US catering to a US customer audience than there are the UK. I see that the UK has Supernal and a couple of others but nothing to the extent of The End, Red Stream, etc.

There are DEDICATED radio stations here that play "metal/rock" during the day, and these are terrestrial (so I'm not talking XM or Sirius, where they themselves play every metal under the sun). There is not a SINGLE radio station in the UK that will play anything even close, unless it's something like the Friday Night Rock Show at midnight for 2 hours (Tommy Vance RIP).

I moved from London to the US and access to metal became EASIER. Living in NYC area means I get all the shows I want whether it be the upcoming shows from Dissection, Emperor, Celtic Frost, or traditional US tours from bands like Manowar, Iced Earth, etc pretty much anything under the sun.

Re: bars, yeah I don't know of any "metal bars" but in this day and age of internet jukeboxes, there is never a night we go out where we're not playing anything that exists on the net, whether it be Maiden or Obituary. So any bar can now play any music.

Regarding high street stores, I would put Vintage Vinyl up against any store in the world when it comes to metal selection -- it is like the DisneyLand of heavy metal CDs -- all completely underground selection, i.e., not typical Maiden, Priest, and other Virgin Megastore fodder. It's like going to The End Records + Dark Symphonies + Deathgasm and seeing all those CDs staked up on shelves, ready for the picking. And that place is 30 minutes from my house.

Seriously, I read Terrorizer and look at the back of the mag for upcoming events and it's laughable. The thing that makes it even more hysterical is that this is the country that gave birth to metal!!

Man, I could keep going... :tickled:

I see what you're saying, but a number of your comments also directly reflect where you live. NYC is definitely the culture capital of all things american, for better or worse. Sometimes I think the only reason anyone stops in columbus is its' handy location straddling I-70 like a dominatrix.

We have nothing approaching underground stores here; the virgin megastore closed, so Best Buy is it. You are absolutely correct about the number of distros though, but judging from the complaints about several of them lately, I'm reluctant to always call that a plus

for instance, today I just found out that the End shipped my package DHL but then DHL turns around and gives it to USPS?? What the heck is that about?
