why do bands think "europe" means germany and maybe the netherlands

I didn't ask for an essay!

Of course America as a whole has a MUCH better metal scene than the UK. That's not even up for debate. But like Lioness said, it's different if you take into consideration how small England is compared to the US. And sounds like you're speaking from a privileged position, living where you do, since you have a particularly good metal scene (just assuming this tbh).

I see what you're saying, but a number of your comments also directly reflect where you live. NYC is definitely the culture capital of all things american, for better or worse.

OK fair enough, so let me clarify: you can take all the arguments I listed above and compare them to London only.

And to reiterate how fair that is, I've lived in both London and NY so I've got a good perception. Plus I go to London every year, own a house there, have friends that live there. etc. So I've still got a good grip of how much its evolved.

That said, my comments about the number of metal festivals in the US compared to the number of metal festivals in the UK still stands. That comparison is so unreal, it can't even be made.

yeah, NYC gets everything. compare some place like Houston with London and we'll lose. I think 2 semi-metal stores, a few shows a year, though they are the more visible bands. we never get any special tours like agalloch and isis

hell i was surprised Pelican and Mono will come here, and we're actually getting a Demilich show I think

what is an interenet jukebox? (not to sound ignorant, guess they aren't up here)

looks like a traditional jukebox, it has X amount of songs on the hard drive ... but it can also access the net and download a shitload of stuff ... of course this will cost a bit more ... but still great.

i mean you can get Obituary and Morbid Angel in a bar ... great time to fuck with people

Wouldn't that defeat the argument though?

The fact is, since the UK is tiny and yet the population by comparison is just enormous (in relation to its geography), you would suspect that the close knit communities etc would spawn many more scenes, metal communities, bars, clubs, etc.

Also, NWOBHM quickly fizzled out. The UK pretty much abandoned metal and moved on, whereas other countries picked up on it and allowed it to evolve. That in itself makes it all the more contradictory.

Since America is so big, the size of the country works AGAINST it having all these attributes and yet it still succeeds to a certain level. Sure, the US doesn't have Wacken and Dynamo etc, but hey, it 'aint as "out of the loop" as the UK, that's all I'm sayin'.

And my essay was directed at Lionness, I just used your post as a catalyst.

the End shipped my package DHL but then DHL turns around and gives it to USPS?? What the heck is that about?

used to deal with DHL on a daily basis ... they work hand in hand with USPS ... if there are not many packages going to a certain area ... or going to a remote area ... they hand all off to USPS ... of course as you can imagine, this can wreak havoc with tracking lost/missing shipments.

cheaper rates than UPS, but their service definetelly lacks ...

Yeah but J, if you lived in London you would have to travel to Germany to see the Wacken fest. Likewise, when Thyrfing, The Chasm, Primordial, and Moonsorrow played at the Heathen Crusade, people travelled to MN.

I know you don't have it on your doorstep, but sometimes you gotta just pack the bags and hit the road. Even living in NYC area, knowing how good we have it locally, we still make the effort. You def should have come to Heathen Crusade. :kickass:

It's funny because we all go to ProgPower as well. Some of us live 30 minutes away from each other but we all go to Atlanta each year to hang out for the weekend.

I feel so lucky. :goggly:

Most bands, popular or underground, come to Berlin. And in summer, I have tons of festivals to choose from. People in Belgium and the Netherlands are even luckier: smaller country, just as many shows/ festivals. I hop on a bus and go over to see the few bands that refuse to play here.

No doubt. And I regret it. I've already told the wife I'm going this year if they have part II. So I can grace all of you with my ugly mug.

Nopes, been to Nürnberg and Bamberg though. Both beautiful cities. What did you do in Erlangen?

My cousin was working at Siemens at the time. He now lives in Australia, but when he lived in Erlangen, I would visit him and hang out for the summer. Cool bars, lots of open nights where they invite anyone to play, great clubs.

I always thought it funny that the Germans in Erlangen were so stuck in this timewarp. I was there in the early 90's, when the whole of Europe was just club crazy with dance music, but Erlangen didn't play by the rules and stuck with 70's classic rock. :tickled:

Lots of students, lots of girls, great town, good times. And then the wall came down and all the East Germans came across and none of them could speak English, and they drove crappy cars. It was so easy to spot an East German from a West German, hehe.

There def will be a sequel. Rumours for HC2 were Ancient Rites and Manegarm a while back, but it might be different now. Nevertheless, these guys know how to put on a good show so we're in safe hands.

Hell, they could have the same exact line up again and I'd be sold.
