Why do shitty bands like Avenged Sevenfold make it to the big labels...

Does it really matter why Avenged has a decent record deal? Think about it, there are countless other bands or solo artists pulling down huge cash for putting out crap. It's not anything to agonize over. The record industry is one continuous, cascading, monkey-fuck of a popularity contest. We all know this.

I'm not trying to piss in your Cheerios here. This is just the way it all dangles. I don't like it either.

These pop bands are fed down listener's throats from radios and MTV/MuchMusic. Mainly people become fans only based on those one or two songs... without EVER hearing another song by them. Its disgusting.

Take a "Pop" radio station. Like Vancouver's "The Beat 94.9."

You hear the same "Akon" song, Fergie song, and Justin Timberlake song, every hour. EVERY HOUR. And you hear it, every hour, of every day, of every week, for several months. Eventually people are going to be like, "okay this actually isn't that bad... Or be in my situation and start destroying stuff everytime it comes on at work. Today I happened to break another speaker at work... I think they're starting to get the point.

Forcing things down people's throat is definitely NOT the reason radio stations play songs as often as they do. That's just what people who hate radio want to believe.

I fail to see why this is even a problem.

Don't like them, don't buy a CD and don't talk about them.

Wonderful music will always be made, you just gotta find it and ignore whatever mainstream/blah-blah nonsense is being touted around by big labels at the moment. I find that getting anxious about it is pretty stupid.

In 40yrs nobody will give a damn about Avenged Sevenfold and that is enough for me not to give a damn about them just now.

I do agree with you there, but honestly, when you are in an environment where you are constantly being fed this generic music which is purely created to make money, then its hard not to be pissed off.

well, I dont really listen to the radio either, aside from this one station that has a show on metal called Full Metal Racket that is good sometimes. But unfortunatly I'm constantly fed this music through people at school... err.. school/college .. thingy.

Without reading all other responses, I think I have the answer.

2 Reasons.

1. Whiney voiced singers are "in" right now. No one ever heard / gave a shit about them before they decided to make a whiney voiced CD.
2. The guitar players are really god damn good.

Now I know your arguments, and I think if they had a shred off between those 2 guys together vs Jeff by himself, Jeff would whoop their asses. But the thing is Warrel isn't whiney. He's a much better singer and I dont just say that because I like him more, he's actually much more talented. BUT his style isnt popular across the mass media. Just be thankful that he hasnt tried to change his vocal style for the purpose of better marketing / making more money.

Except for Iron Maiden, Rush, Dream Theater, Judas Priest, maybe a couple of other bands.

Just remember, none of them were the *stars* of their day, either. Maiden was selling out arenas without any radio play (and, later on, being virtually ignored by MTV). Priest got more radio time, but still weren't being played like Ratt or anyone like that.

Rush is just Rush - if they started in 2000, they'd never make it past "Caress of Steel", because even the indy labels would have bounced them. DT's major success (other than "Pull Me Under", which is just an example of the stars aligning) has been after they became a shitty band that just panders to their audience.

Avenged Sevenfold? Poison with HC-kiddie cred. Next...
