i went to 02 as well as 03 this year and i noticed loads of younger people this year, more ppl with the graham norton hair cut, less long haired rockers what attrated em all? ive a hunch it was blaze, i saw alot of em gettin into blaze, also nightwish possibly.

Hou may be right, but I noticed alot of young (under 10) kids all gothed up...very scary sight... Also sat in the balcony to watch Saxon (buggered my knee up...) and looking around there was a family (mum, dad + 2 kids 5 +6 ish) as well as a couple of pensioners behind me - what the...:err:

As one of the "young 'uns" (I'm 18), I'll say that it could be because mainstream so-called "indie" music has become unbelievably depressing over the past few years. I mean you have bands like Travis, Radiohead and Coldplay that basically just sit around with accoustic guitars (often with those REALLY BLOODY ANNOYING floaty wishy-washy electronic instruments in the background, especially Radiohead) complaining about how washed-up and alone they are, boo hoo. I dunno, maybe young people are looking for something a little more energetic, and a little more ENTERTAINING? I certainly was.

Also, fast Internet access has become much more popular over the last two or three years, and it's made it MUCH easier to try out new music (this is how I discovered metal after an online friend recommended some Iron Maiden songs; I just downloaded some MP3s and was instantly hooked!). With MP3s you really can "try before you buy", so people no longer have to accept what they hear on the radio, nor do they have anything to lose by taking the initiative and looking up a music genre they've never thought of trying before.

The setlist for this year's festival helped too. Saxon and Saracen were (I think) the only bands in the entire festival that were more than a decade old! This probably helped break down the popular image of heavy metal being an 80s "fad". The bands there were fresh and new! Even Saracen were showcasing new material.

Of course, Tarja probably had something to do with it as well. :D

I have been attending gigs and festivals for nearly 20 years and at one time had very long hair. Now I'm a lot older (and going bald) I keep my hair short. My attitude to it is that so long as your into the music what does it matter

LOL, yeah. Damn, if it's like that for Dragonforce, imagine how many plastic swords there'd be if someone like Manowar or Blind Guardian headlined next year! :ill:

I took my ten year old to Bloodstock for the first time this year and she was right down at the fron when Blaze was on, she loved it and is already looking forward to next year.

Start em young that's what I say other wise they will fall victim to the evil that is POP MUSIC

Was talking about this on the Saturday night to Steve W from Powerquest. It really was refreshing to see so many younger fans in attendance, not only that but genuine fans who weren't dragged along or just there for the one band!!!

Wake up Kerrang! and the like..................not everyone wants to be American!!

well said, I have an 11 year old whos into metal big time, he's only seen Alice Cooper and Thunder so far and is going to Maiden at Earls Court in December. Young people are the future, we need them to get into real rock & metal not all this nu-metal crap

I'm currently in the denial phase :) Mine's still long, but rapidly thinning. I havne't decided what to do about it yet. One option is to just let it go bald on top, and have a Phil Collins/Francis Rossi style "bald with ponytail" look. If nothing else, it'll *really* piss off my sister, and that alone has to be worth something :)

i saw quite a few youngsters rocking out like the best of us

ed-hunter(from blaze BB) 's daughter for one and several others - these kids deserve to be there - not the people who claim to have found metal thru likes of limp bizkit etc

lol.

i have theories about long hair.

neither the fella or i want him short haired but we both admit that if he gets stupidly thin on top then we will accept he may need to cut it off as neither of us like that look.

As for kids at real metal gigs .. id rather that than they were at some fuckin arse trendy club where they were gonna get their asses drugged up and raped while listening to trendy music ina room full of sheep that look the same :D

ok rant over

Bah! On my way to a Blaze gig in Fulham earlier this year, I was talking to some young whippersnappers like yourself on the way from the station. They had recently got into Maiden, and asked how long I'd liked them. When they found out my first Maiden record was "Run to the hills" when it was originally released as a single, there was an awkward silence. "Oh," says one of them, "I was 2 when it was released". Thanks guys. Way to make me feel old :)

Tet..I constantly have the same problem! Most recently at on Friday when I disclosed how old I was when I first saw Saxon! Thanks Mentalee!!

As far the youngsters are concerned i have my own mini-metal head here at home! She is 6 and will be attending her first gig in December; Maiden at the Newcastle Arena! I am seriously thinking about bringing her along next year. She loves her metal especially Gamma Ray and I know she would have a good day! It just means I have to be in Mum mode for two days! :(

Man... some people don't have a sense of humour.

I was one of the crowd with a sword.

It's power metal. They sing about dragons! It's not totally 50000% serious now is it? It was just a little bit of fun is all - and afterall, that's what Bloodstock is about, right?

Plus, i think you'll find Dragonforce quite liked our little sword waving escapades.

Anyways, with that said, their were a lot of children there (i class as under 18) because of Nightwish, they've most likely been on kerrang or mtv, or had a fullpage spread in some kind of false magazine. So that's the reason i come up with :)
