I'll start with a real maestro, one Muris Varajic. Maybe some of you would recognize him from his Guitar Idol competitions entries... He did not win them but he sure deserved it IMO! His is heavily influenced by the rhythms and melodics of his native Bosnia (mostly recognized by various odd signatures and harmonic/melodic minor scales, garnered with trills), which he of course incorporated in his songs posted here... Not only is he technically very proficient and versed in many styles, he really plays soulfully and really does not give an impression of "just another boring showoff shredder". I'm really delighted by his playing and like to listen to some of his stuff once in a while. He also holds classes at http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ you can check him out there as well...

See for yourself:

This guy it´s not widely unknown but more like well unknown. But he is a beast of a player, technically and musically.

Well he's not that unknown nowadays but Tosin Abasi!

+1

I like the way he uses the 8 string in such a different way to someone like Fredrik Thordendal or Dino Cazares, watching his videos gave me new idea for clean shit!

Another vote for Dimi... That dude completely slays on anything he touches.

is anyone else getting tired of the harmonic minor/phrygian dominant styled solos these days or is it just me?

Yup so bored with guys like Loomis, Bellas, Romeo and Cooley. I had enough of that in the 80s. Time to buck up and start using odd shit like Neapolitan or Enigmatic more often ... hahahaha

Recently more popular guys like Holdsworth and Gambale have really been turning my ear. Guthrie is on the same wavelegnth as those guys which is why recently his playing has really turned my head.

McCoy Tyner! Wait, wrong instrument. Sonny Rollins! Ugh, dammit :erk: John Coltrane! Ugh, shit, shit! I fail at this.

Have you heard of a guy called pat martino? He's less fusiony but completely rips jazz stuff apart he's damn good

Have I heard of Pat Martino?!? Shiit, son. Martino is the bee's knee's. Dude phrases so hard the notes be gotta lick the sweet off his fingers to quench their thirst.

ya Pat is sick!

I grew up in a very Jazz heavy household. Dad was a frequent at the jam nights at the Blue Note back in NYC! My first live music experience was my dad jamming with Larry Coryell at the Village Vanguard. I was like 8 or some shit and was sitting on Larrys amp ...lol

Dad jammed with tons of those guys back in the day. It was good times and I think it really pushed me to learn theory and the foundation of the instrument.

Steffen Schackinger. He's an incredibly soulful and accurate player who doesn't balls out shred very often, but when he does I just think "fuck yeah, where did that come from?!"
