Is it just me, or is the emotion behind this track so unmatchable that even later era Katatonia songs don't reach such depressive levels of expressions?

I always hear Murder and Day mentioned among people's favourite Katatonian songs. Perhaps the "your fucking God is dead and shall forever be!" part makes the people shudder when listening to the track, but I've somehow noticed that it is just as anti-Christian as other Kata tracks(read: not really).

Any thoughts?

that is the track that got me into katatonia (first one I've heard I guess)

nowdays I find it a bit silly..
but, that's me :)

Dance of december souls was surely a masterpiece album for doom metal fans. That killer doom riff at the begining of the song "without god".I feel like i am dying when i hear it.Doom metal fans knows how its like that feeling.
I cant feel that emotion when i listen new katatonia.Music of katatonia is cold and a bit melancholic now but not doomed and depressive anymore.

I don't think the lyrics are crappy at all [I don't take them really serious though]... for me it was also one of the first "old era" songs I heard... and liked it pretty much.
I agree that it has a very intensive and emotional expression... but I don't think that it remains unreached by newer stuff... I just think the newer stuff is different and emotional in another way. *hm*

Well, my fave among the old styled stuff is still Funeral Wedding ... ;D ...

Dance of December soul was recorded in 1993.During golden age of Black Metal. Its natural that the songs has got anticrist lyrics. In their neighbour norway metal musicians were arsoning the churchs.During that period anti christianity of norwegian black metal scene affected most of north europe extreme bands. Also Anders was a young and brilliant black metal musician in that period.
And he was holding an axe.:D

Ah fuck, Dance of December Souls is such a damn beautiful album. I fucking adore it! :kickass: I for one definitely take this one over Brave Murder Day overall anyday of the week.

Velvet Thorns is such a brilliant song - so god damn evil sounding. This WHOLE album is, but man...4 min into Velvet Thorns REALLY kicks ass.

As for Without God, great song but BY FAR not the best off the album - especially not when you have songs like Gateways to Breavement, Tombs of Insomnia and Velvet Thorns.
