World debut of Amaranthe's brand-new video for Amaranthine

Two things...and maybe I can redeem myself back to being a good standing citizen on this forum:

I listened to the song. And I can say this: it's catchy in a pop way and I can see its appeal in that regard. That's not my immediate turn-off. The turn off is the aesthetic. I see this as no different from Delain from a few years ago. I understand the appeal to others but I can't see myself buying their material or knowing their stuff when they play. But I will watch. I make it a point to watch as many bands as I can - that's the whole reason for going to ProgPower.

Secondly, dreadlocks guy actually has a great voice, and I honestly wish this were his band because he was the highlight of the song.

So if I may more respectfully state that they are not my favorite band of the announcement, I will also say that I don't disagree with their inclusion at ProgPower. The announcement video made it clear that it's not just Prog and Power any more (something that's been the case probably since Mercenary and Into Eternity were playing). So for the band Amaranthe to be included (just like Delain) on the cusp of popularity is a good thing for ProgPower.

Better?

Bah.. you can't even land the primetime weather slot. We'll talk when you get that.:lol:

This kinda reflects my feelings about Amaranthe and Delain as well. It feels like they are on the bill because they are the hot band of the moment. Neither band are ones I was particularly jonesing to see, yet got a midround slot based on one album.

It is Glenn's festival and he can run it how he sees fit, but sometimes...

With all due respect dude, why wouldn't a band that is "hot" get a good slot? The goal of a promoter is to get people to come to your show so that the investment you put in comes back after all, so why would he put some band nobody cares about on the fest just because they have 10 albums out? I don't like Amaranthe, and in fact, I didn't think they'd be doing half as well as they're doing now and as such I had a nice bowl of my words for lunch. The number of albums a band has =/= success. Come on...

Holy crap, I completely forgot this was JAKE'S band!!!! All the nonsense attention on a wispy little chick who's more pop diva than a metal frontwoman turned me off to this band so quickly that I never took a second look. Jake was supreme at PPUSAXI! I'm excited to get to hear him sing live again!

Maybe I should call you Boomhauer, because I couldn't understand half of what you said there. :loco:

My personal feeling is that a mid-round player should have a bit of a track record. Otherwise, what you are mostly getting is whatever is on their debut, with no real clue if they will be anything more than what they are on the debut. Goodness knows I have enough bands who put out just one good album.

Maybe part of me is still bitter that Superior could only draw an opening slot at ProgPower. I know that's a lifetime ago as far as the festival goes, but it is still a sore spot for me. There are certainly a lot of other bands that I'd rather see in that spot that have richer discographies.

They are the highest selling debut band Spinefarm has ever released. That's a track record, and that's what counts when deciding where the billing goes. Lamb Of God doesn't have as many albums out as Nightmare or Mystic Prophecy, but those bands are small time fish food compared to LoG. The number of albums a band has out has nothing to do with your success as a band and where they should be placed on a show, which is determined by success + how many people would come out to see the band. Sorry for my last post not being clear, hope this is clear enough.

And Delain got a pretty damn good reaction when they played, as I'm sure Amaranthe will.

Amaranthe may not be my personal thing, but I don't see why it should be a bad thing that Glenn is booking a band that's on the rise in a 3 slot. Look at the video for Hunger...the producer of the video, the scope of the video...Amaranthe is not being promoted as some random band putting out their debut album and hoping they get some traction. I don't have industry connections as others here do, but it seems obvious even from an outsider that Amaranthe are positioned to do well and that booking them will 1) sell tickets and 2) garner exposure for the festival. Both of these ensure the health of the fest and encourage Glenn to continue doing that, which I'm pretty sure everyone here is in favor of.

Lastly, does 3 slot vs. 2 slot really even matter that much? Both get an hour, both are going to be playing mid to late afternoon...it seems like this is such a pedantic argument that misses the point entirely.

Didn't know that...they even surpassed Bodom's debut? I know Bodom didn't get hot right out of the gate, but this kinda drives home the point that I was going for, in that they're positioned to succeed and thus far are doing so.

+1 .. all of it.

"Sometimes..." what? You don't like a decision? Because I KNOW you're not going to say it's bad business to book a band who has every potential to explode in the US market to help sell tickets.

Or is this just another "whaaaaaaaaaa I don't like them, why can't you cater to my tastes, so this is a bad idea" post?

lol apparently. I don't think Spinefarm was owned by Universal then to be fair. I mean, Suicide Silence was the highest selling Century Media debut and when you consider how many CDs they put out in the 90's it says something. I never would have called Amaranthe's success for sure, because there are so many other bands like that, but props to them of course. If you get people to buy music, I don't care what you sound like! haha

Was there an announcement made somewhere that I missed that said, "Today is the day to be a total fucking asshole to Glenn on the forum?" Did I miss the "You can be a douchebag for free today because you don't agree with a band selection?"

Diablo was fine with his comments other than the skimpy outfit part. I consider myself friends of the band and it was just disrespectful in my own house. Otherwise, he can simply say...I really don't like the band."

I get that you don't like every band. However, "but sometimes"....I put up with some of the biggest prick comments ever. For your information, Delain has sold just as many, if not more albums than any band that I have had in that slot or below at the time on an album to album ratio. They also have had the longest signing session of the past five years (1 hr,40 minutes per my staff update as of 8:13pm tonight- thanks Keith). You don't like them. Others do.

Amaranthe are blowing the fuck up all over the world with the U.S. territory being the last in line. Hell, at one point, they ranked higher than Lady Gaga in Japan on the international artist charts.

Superior is your bitter pill? Holy shit. I love the band, but you do realize they only sold a handful of albums and never properly toured as anything other than an opening band in Europe? They had a cult status and nothing more. Hell, if we are going on discography numbers, then Virgin Steele or Rage should have packed the place instead of playing to 1/2 full floors.

If you don't like a band, just say you don't like the band.

Yeah, the Universal deal was in '02 (looked it up out of curiosity). Still for a label that has Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica on its roster, it speaks volumes that Amaranthe is their biggest debut.

Wow...

Having them there was the cherry on top of a great lineup that pushed me into buying two tickets and us going for the first time. Can't see how Glenn went wrong booking them. I've been listening to them since Black Wind posted a review a few months ago, and their cd hasn't even been officially released in America (cheer's for Amazon Mp3 store there!)....and they're still getting bigger. And yes, the dual Epica/Symphony X headliners were *probably* enough to get me to go this year because everything has fallen into place (a steady job and health issues) for us to go. But Amaranthe just puts it over the top for me, personally. I love the three vocals, because I love all kinds of music, and love to mix it up! Can't wait!
