Wow...Dimmu Borgir to tour with Unearth?

It was not a finished product...

I prefer Stormblast of all Dimmu, personally, so you can see how my opinion may be a bit biased.

And max is right, to an extent. Dimmu Borgir is not black metal, though in 1994-1997 they were for a bit.
For All Tid is pretty much traditional/folk black metal in my eyes, like Dark Medieval Times or In The Glare Of Burning Churches. Even Filosofem at times.
I heard some rehearsal stuff from Stormblast. If the production would have been like the way they really wanted it, it would have sounded really harsh. Kind of like Devil's Path EP, but more folk influenced.
From what I understand, it was supposed to sound more like this

After that, I think they always kept certain elements of black metal, but they went in a more tradtional metal kind of direction. I wouldn't call that selling out, but some people do apparently.

I saw that.

The stormblast rerecording was really AWFUL IMO, but if that is the way they will play the material live, I'll enjoy it.

Well, If they have the fucking Piano intro that is.

Also, I have a theory as to why Dimmu suck so hard now...

Mustis.

Silenoz, the only still competent member of Dimmu, writes some awesome shit (See For All Tid, the original Stormblast, and to a lesser extent Enthrone Darkness Triumphant). Then, in 98, Mustis was brought in by Shagrath, in what I like to call Shagrath's coup detat of Dimmu Borgir, which started slowly actually, by making Tjodalv play drums after For All Tid cause Shagrath didn't want to be the drummer, and then eventually pushing Tjodalv around till Tjodalv said "Fuck you fags, I don't want to have anything to do with the direction you guys are going in" and quit. And then he pushed Aarstad out, and to put people on his side, shagrath claimed he was "too drunk for the band". How the hell can you kick out your coolest member? He wore a top hat and a cape for fucks sake!

SEE! He was a true bad ass. And he kept his keyboards in the background, not to push it infront of Silenoz's awesome music.

Anyway, back to Mustis, Mustis is a good keyboard player, and Shagrath, in his "New direction" for the band, decided he would let Mustis write a large chunk of the songs, and in turn that added the heavy synth sound of Dimmu Borgir today. Then Shagrath stopped playing guitar, made himself the main Vocalist (Silenoz always had better vocals), and tada, we have the Dimmu we know today. Silenoz's music is overshadowed by Mustis and Shagroth's synths and orchestrals, and very awful vocals, and they have a lot of money.

Silenoz needs to take back HIS band (it was Silenoz's band, now most people don't even know who the fuck Silenoz is and think Shagrath when someone says Dimmu Borgir), so we can enjoy it once again.

Well, it was Silenoz, Shagrath and Tjodalv's band, but I see your point.
But I noticed Galdar has a lot of influence on the band's sound. Lately, they had a very Old Man's Child sort of sound, but more brutal and aggressive. Mustis is definitely very talented, but he really overdoes it at times. SBD had waaaaay too much synth work. Luckily the guitars still overpowered it.
I think Dimmu needs to get Aldrahn back as a more regular kind of guest. I think he wrote one song on the last album. I always liked his style. I guess it would be too much to ask if they had him be sort of like a member, like with Old Man's Child's Born Of The Flickering.

I don't think they ever should have let Tjodalv go. He's an excellent drummer, and he never sounded over processed like Barker. At least Hellhammer is really interesting.

I think overbearing synths (ie the keyboard as the lead instrument) is a bad idea in general, but tasteful use of them can really enrich music and add atmosphere.

And for the record, old Dimmu sucks too :p

agreed here.
@will, take nevermore as an example of a band with 2 guitars and no keyboards and they rape ALL those who use synths (or don't). Keyboards are an excuse for shit lead guitar playing so people need a form of good sounding lead in keyboards. Death still rapes most bands with synths.
opeth and dragonlord remain the bands with tasteful use of keyboards. And negura bunget, but i can hardly notice the synths at times

I don't think keys take away from the guitar work. I mean, look at 80% of prog bands out there.

Even though I hate most power metal, they are usually pretty good guitarists.
Timo Kotipelto is incredible, ever since the first Stratovarius album (they were best earlier on since they were kind of proggy back then).

Death rapes all bands, except for King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, which is equal.

I like Keyboards, providing the synth settings are avoided. Anything that can texture a song or add a dimension to the feelings it imparts is fine by me.
