For a band whose fate was tragically sealed with the bizarre suicide of guitarist Hide, the reality behind Art of Life is one of those cruel ironies that both elevates a work to higher levels of ingenuity, while making it painfully more difficult to endure. The 30 minute "Art of Life" single is either an over-wrought musical melodrama, or a flawless power-prog exercise in excellence, depending on your perspective. For me, that Stratovarius-like tendency for affecting, emotional vocal melodies cannot be ignored, an ability that has always seemingly come with ease for this oft-ignored band. Traces of thrash for sure, but X characterize prog-metal at it's best, like if an unfromaged Dream Theater decided to pen songs as opposed to riff collages, or Mindcrime era Queensryche with a more soaring, songful edge. Western prog fans unfamiliar with these guys would do well in seeking them out.
In other words, check these guys out.

the following link is from chedsey.com. It's a pretty ordinary site, but if you are interested, there is a international cult following of this band so there is a wealth of information out there.

Well, I'd say, download the song Rose of Pain first.

Nice proggy easy to get into song.

But there is sooo much good stuff.

Kurenai is X - Japan's Demon of the fall, or One.. their most loved song.

so that's another good one.

More:

Dahlia, Scars, Silent Jealousy, Tears and of Course Art Of Life.

Art Of Life is an amazing song, 30 mins.

Alternate story on Hide's death, from Band members:

This was officially announced that hide didn't commited suicide, but it was a really sad and dreadful incident. Lets explain it : because guitar players have to hang their guitars down for a long periode of time and also have to arch their neck while playing, they tend to have bad stiff shoulders. A 'popular' way of treating these stiff shoulders is to pull back the head, which is doing like a massage. Most of hide's friends confessed that he often did that kind of treatement at home, by hooking a towel at a door knob, to his neck. That morning, he came back home drunk, and did this massage. Unfortunately, he fell asleep during the 'treatment', smashed by alcohol... and never wakes up. He involontary strungle himself... now, decide what truth you believe in.

The night before is death, hide was invited at the Ms Mayuko Kishi Show. There, he talked about some plans for the future and dreams he wanted to realize.

(Actually, hide had 2 big accidents in 1997. He badly broke his skull and ankles... because he was drunk. There are lots of stories about other troubles he went throught when drunk..)

many rumors sorrounded his death,

I tend to beleive this one more. Hide was very pro life. Kinda inconsevable that he would kill himself.

he was a great musician though.

X are amazing! I have Blue Blood and another album whose title I don't know (both taped for me by an old Japanese penfriend). Loved their blend of technical metal and full on bubblegum pop :p

Vanishing Vision 1998

Their first album, 100% thrashy 80's goodness.

Blue Blood 1989

Blue and stuff. Style progressed, more sure sounding record. bit's of proggyness, and a few great anthems like "Rose Of Pain", "Kurenai" and "Weekend"

Jealousy 1991

Another great progression, they tried lotsa new ideas here like "Love Replica" thrash and metal plentiful

Art Of Life 1993

Thirty minute single track. Genius.

Dahlia 1995

Final Album, full of emotional ballads, electronic influences and some real heavy riffs. Possibly a bit pop oriented, but still damn good.

How do I make the images the same size?

My first J band. I never heard that about hide either. Very interesting.

I'd recommend Blue Blood or Vanishing Vision. Or Dahlia. Jealousy isn't their best I think, but that's just me.

I've only heard about 10-15 minutes of Art Of Life and it was great. One of the metalreviews.com reviewers is an X-Japan freak; that's how I found out about them actually.

It's cool to see there are some fans out there.

Has anyone see there final Dahlia Concert? It's on 3 videos, or DVD's, and is one of the most amazing and hugest metal concerts of all time. There was a lot of unreleased material in the concert, lotsa really crazy stuff, cool electronica bits, and 18 minute drum solos, bass solo's, naked women, chains and lotsa goodies.
