I say Yayogakk because I assume that from your liking of Vai and your incredible musicianship that you have a pretty good knowledge of music and theory.

I am looking for some links or books to expand my mind. I've lately had many revelations about music, and many new things are making sense in my mind, and I am forming certain theories as to the structure of music. Basically, I want to expand this and broaden my musical mind.

I don't want your simple scale charts or anything, but actual theories, things that make you think. For example this article I was reading that mentioned if you play a drum in quarter notes, and speed it up to 440 BPM, it will create the continuous tone of A. However, record a drum playing three beats and another simultaneously playing two beats over that, and speed it up, you'll hear a fifth interval created.

Anyway, I just want weird shit somewhat along those lines. Maybe some intermediate theory stuff such as that may just bring my random chaotic thoughts together. Any help is much appreciated! :)

My music knowledge is very uhhh, disjointed, i know some things inside out, other things i know bits and pieces, some things i know nothing.

If your looking for weird things, well you better have advanced knowledge of the basics first. THe things i have worked on or am working on that i find important:

1. time signatures - dont just stuff around with them, read up on them, there is much more to be done than just adding an extra beat onto the end of a riff to make it 9/8.

2. scales - again, read and learn and study and practice. When you get to a section of a song and you want to create a certain sound you will know how to do that. You wont automatically go for the minor scale or whatever scale your favourite band uses and end up with a riff that sounds the same as all the rest.

3. harmonisations - pick any two notes and play them together, there are ways to use those two notes, even if by themselves they sound shit together. learn and read on this and your creativity will expand hugely.

4. chord creation - i guess this has to do with harmonisation, but just learn to create your own chords, instead of using shapes that everyone else uses. A minor chord may sound 'right', but maybe theres a different chord that your really looking for? I havent really learnt much theory on this, its one of the things ive learnt through trial and error and just fucking around.

If you havent perfected the above things (plus many other 'basic' techniques and knowledge of music) then maybe you shouldnt be jumping up to the really weird oddities.

I personally know how to make my guitar sound like a car, and how to make it sound like an elephant, amongst oher things ive probably forgotten, all amusing but really theres no use for them other than getting a laugh. Is playing a drum beat at 440bpm really any use??

So yeh, my advice is to get to an advanced level for the things you probably already know, dont just think 'i already know harmonisations' just because you can write a riff in thirds or fifths and happened to fluke an odd harmonisation once.

enough for now anyway, dunno if any of it was useful.

[Edit]i dont have any links for this stuff, im just pointing you in the right direction, so maybe you know what to search for
oh and if its solo technique you want the buy the Passion & Warfare tab book and instead of just learning the notes, study it, see what he's doing.[/Edit]
