I never could stand doing charcoal drawings. The sound of the charcoal on paper just makes me cringe much like fingernails on chalkboard.

yea dude totally! it took a long time to get used to. pastels are better for that reason.

Ahh, pastels. I totally forgot about those things. I did a few awesome still lifes in high school with those. Like a pear and a bowl with a roll of duct tape or something stupid like that.
